Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This relatively new variety of maple was found at Esveld Nursery in the Netherlands and named for the founder's daughter, Mirte Yasemin. Deeply-lobed leaves have slightly serrated edges and a rich burgundy-red coloration. Purple color in summer and crimso
The large, deeply divided leaves of this 30' shrub selection are a shiny dark purple-red spring into summer before becoming scarlet in the fall; an excellent choice for borders in colder climates; may be A. palmatum hybrid. S/M
Large, dissected red leaves decorate this handsome tree which develops a wide, spreading branch form and grows up to 25 or 30 feet tall. The dark red color lasts all year on this variety even when trees are planted in the shade, making Yasemin one of the most attractive and reliable of all the red leaf Japanese Maple varieties.
Some nurseries list this variety as an Acer palmatum while others list this variety as belonging to Acer shirasawanum. It is possible it is a hybrid between both species but it seems to have more characteristics of a Full Moon Maple than a Palmate Maple.

Care and Receiving Your Tree
Like with other plants that are shipped bare root, you should plant your tree as soon as possible. When planting be sure to spread the roots out a little so they are not clumped together at the bottom of the hole. Japanese Maples want the top of their root crown to be covered with just an inch of soil - be careful not to apply heavy mulch directly on top of the roots as this can suffocate them. Water heavily as soon as you plant your tree but after that be careful not to over-water this beautiful specimen - Japanese Maples prefer long but less frequent watering. During the growing season we water our established trees for two hours once per week, depending on the climate and how hot/dry the weather is (maybe a little more frequently during the hottest part of the year and less frequently during spring and fall when it is cooler). If you are growing your Japanese Maples in containers be sure to use a well-drained soil mix (not peat or compost based, bark based soils do best) and water whenever the soil starts to dry out.

Japanese Maples do best when fertilized in the spring, we recommend a slow release pellet like Osmocote Plus in April. Don't apply fertilizer later than mid-June because it will encourage too much late season growth that will not have time to harden off enough for winter. The exact formula doesn't matter too much, we usually use 15-10-10 but any other works fine for Japanese Maples. Osmocote is the brand we use because it releases steadily for several months and so there is very little risk of over-fertilizing your plants.

Yasemin is another new cultivar introduced by Talon Buchholz of Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. As with all shirasawanum ‘full moon maples’ the bark is unusual and seed pods [samaras] point upward and not down as with palmatum cultivars. This special cultivar has a deeply dissected and shiny leaf which is unusual for a shirasawanum maple and gives it an air of elegance. The beautiful dark burgundy leafs fade somewhat in the summer, but do not disappoint the bright scarlet red in the fall. The dark purple-black bark provides for winter interest. Yasemin grows more like a tree than a shrub with an estimated eight in 10 years of 10′ and a 8′ spreading canopy with a final height of 15′. It has lovely shape and requires little pruning to keep it looking its best. This cultivar can handle full sun to partial shade, but mostly sun is recommended. It is a perfect maple for a small sunny garden as the centerpiece. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

Acer shirasawanum 'Yasemin' - An upright tree with shiny purple-red leaves. By summer the foliage changes to bronze-red, then brilliant purple-red in fall. Thought to be a cross between acer shirasawanum and acer palmatum.
Yazemin is thought to be a cross between palmatum and shirasewanum. The leaves are a glossy crimson into the summer changing to a bronze sort of color--very distinctive really. The tree gets large: 25-30'.
Robust selection with heights over 25' tall in time. Choice, deeply cut and heavily toothed red leaves.
