Perfect for a smaller garden, this outstanding purple-red variety forms a column that gets about 10' tall but only 3' wide in 10 years. Found as a witches broom, it develops intense color that lasts through the growing season and then flashes into spectac
Twombly's Red Sentinel Japanese Maple is a columnar shaped red leafed variety. It is an upright tree that will remain fairly narrow for compared to its height. Fall colors are brilliant red with orange hues.
Twombly's Red Sentinel (also often spelled Twombley's) is a narrow Japanese Maple variety growing up to 15-20 feet tall but only 4-5 feet wide, forming a dense columnar tree. It is very similar to Bloodgood in color and has dark red leaves through the year with orange hues developing in the fall but seems to be faster growing and develops a thicker trunk on shorter trees. Because of its narrow habit is one of the few full-height Japanese Maple varieties that fits well in smaller landscapes. Twombly's Red Sentinel is now frequently used in Japanese Gardens where it is placed in a corner and the branches are pruned in a layered shelf form, creating a traditional flowing water style.
This is one of the only columnar Japanese maples that we know of. The spring foliage is brilliant red lasting through the summer and turning to crimson in the fall. Growth Rate slow to medium
This wonderful dark red Japanese Maple is popular for its unique "pillar" form and fast growth habit. Very unique!
This Ken Twombly introduction has a unique narrow, upright shape, attractive in many situations where space is limited, particularly close to a building or walkway. The plant in our home landscape seems more appealing with each passing season. It remains a strong maroon color all summer long here in NW Oregon.
A witch's broom on Bloodgood, this forms a slow-growing upright small tree (to 6-10' wide x 8-14' tall) w/fine deep burgundy foliage all season ; bright red, very long lasting fall color. Sun-PSh/Med
New leaves bright red, change to burgundy. Dense, columnar shape, crimson fall color. Hardy to Zone 5
With today's small landscapes, narrow trees are in high demand, but until now it has been very difficult finding a Japanese maple to fill this niche. This selection should help narrow the gap.
Supposedly Twombly is a columnar bright red dwarf, but I have seen one 15' x 8' so it wasn't small but it was indeed TIGHT and columnar, but fatly columnar.
Discovered as a witch's broom of Acer 'Bloodgood' at Twombley's Nursery in CT, this distinctive red leaved Japanese Maple has a slightly broad columnar habit, reaching 15' in height and up to 8' in width, although careful pruning can keep it on the narrow side. It also remarkable in that it holds it leaves in New England through late November. 4-5' plants for spring shipping.
Red. The only columnar Japanese maple that we know. The spring foliage is brilliant red lasting through the summer and turning to crimson in the fall. This is a perfect tree for small narrow settings.

Intense, light red new growth in spring settles into a consistent, saturated burgundy-red tone into fall on this dense small tree: dense and intense! Its strong vertical growth habit becomes vase-shaped with age. Brilliant! 10' tall in 10 years and 3' wide.
