?This very desirable cultivar has 3 outstanding features? (Vertrees) its upright, vase-shaped habit (20-40'), its unusual leaves with the margins of each lobe rolling to form a tube and its intense yellow-gold fall color. PSh/M
This selection has a stiffly upright shape, unlike the round head or umbrella form of so many other palmatums. New growth can shoot up to 3 feet in one season, then fills in with small twiggy branches. Can be pruned to stay smaller.
'Okushimo' is definitely a rare an unusual variety for any garden. The margins of each rich green lobe is curled up, lending itself to a star-like appearance. The shape of this tree is also unusual. 'Okushimo' has a vase-like growing habit with branches that reach upward. Fall colors are yellow and gold. 'Okishumo', which means "pepper-and-salt-leaf maple" can grow to a height of 10 feet. This cultivar needs protection from hot sun.
Acer palmatum 'Okushimo' Japanese Maple Tree - A vase-shaped shrub that can reach 15', with great looking leaves similar to ' Kurui jishi ', but somewhat less curled. Some would say the leaf gives an appearance of a bird's foot. This is a nice variety from Japan.
This unique Japanese maple, first recorded in 1704, has three distinctive qualities. Its rich green leaf lobes curl and roll upward to almost form tapering tubes. The distinctly vase-like form has contrasting features: a sturdy, erect stature with compact clusters of leaves and delicate twigs. Finally, the fall foliage can become such an intense yellow as to be nearly fluorescent.
Rich green leaf edges curl upwards, habit twiggy and upright, bright gold-yellow fall color Zones 5-9, Name=pepper & salt leaf
Like Kurui jishi, Okushimo has curled-in leaves, but the tree is much narrower and taller (which is not saying much in terms of height (10')), and the leaves are a light fresh green in the summer. Fall color is variable, gold to red.
A slender vase-shaped tree bearing distinctive 5 or 7 lobed green foliage with edges that curl inward, creating a tubular effect. Fall color is a brilliant red orange gold. Although eventually as tall as 12-15', it is easily pruned and lends itself to bonsai. Large 5-6' plants for fall shipping.
PALMATUM, green. Small leaves are sharply pointed at each lobe tip. An unusual effect is created by upward curling leaf edges. 'Okushimo' is an upright growing, vase shaped tree. It is vigorous, and young trees can grow as much as 3' per season. Leaves turn fluorescent gold in autumn.
