An open pyramid for with green to blue-green needles. Cones heavily at a young age. Is prized in bonsai and Asian landscapes for the black warts it develops on older bark.
This trees outstanding feature is its bark which develops fissured irregularities as it ages, making it extremely popular for bonsai work. The rough bark gives the appearance of age. Green summer leaves turn to yellow-gold in fall. Name refers to rough bark in Japanese. All of our Arakawa trees are very low grafted.
Acer palmatum 'Arakawa' Japanese Maple Tree - Called the 'Rough Bark Maple'. This Japanese Maple is known for its deeply fissured bark. Bark is corky with longitudinal creases and short cracks. Leaves are a regular green palmatum. Fall color is yellow.
A green-leaf, upright cultivar sought for its dark, corky bark on the trunk and older branches. Foliage turns red and orange-red in the fall. It grows with dense branches to 25-35 ft. and can be used attractively as a grafted inter-stem, with weeping varieties grafted on top.
Rough corky bark with creases, irregularities and longitudinal cracks make this a collector's item and a conversation piece. Perfect for bonsai, as the trunk texture gives an aged appearance. Rough bark appears after 5 years of age. The English translation means "rough bark".
