Nursery contributed plant descriptions

This vigorous, shrubby 12-15' tree makes a beautiful dense hedge, especially in spring when its new foliage is purplish-red. Attractive red winged seeds (samaras) in spring. S/M
New growth purple red, fades to green summer. Red samaras, followed by yellow fall color. Zones 5-9.
Hedge maples are just that: maples to be made into hedges; the reason is that the limbs go everywhichaway filling up all available space; there are a couple of cultivars that lend themselves to stand alone semi-shade status (Elizabeth, eg), but generally the species lends itself to hedgeness (hedgity?). Royal Rubies is a fair large growing cultivar with deep red leaves in the spring which turn green in the summer when it provides a showy mass of bright red seeds (hence the name). Way hardy. zone 4.
Copious crops of winged fruit begin green and transform to deep ruby-red for notable ornamental effect; it almost looks as though the tree were in flower. 20' tall tree with a rounded crown and upright branching.
