This compact form has the same white flowers in spring, and the showy bright red fruits and brilliant red leaves in the fall that the species does, but on a compact scale... (4-5', rather than 10-15'). S/M
Superb shrub! Compact growth, 4-5' high and wide; attractive foliage – White lace cap flowers in summer followed by cranberry red berried in winter – Sun to light shade, not fussy about growing conditions – Classy deciduous shrub that is small enough to make it really versatile!
As we write the catalog this viburnum is doing its thing. The fruit turns brilliant red and yellow. The white lace cap flowers appear in May and make a nice display. But, it's the fruit in late summer that is a real showstopper.
Deciduous, multi-stemmed, dense shrub that forms into a rounded habit. White flower clusters show up in May and change into brilliant red fruits by early fall. Foliage is dark green, changing to yellow-red or reddish purple, or simply falling off green in the fall. Great for those smaller spaces in the garden where it can show off its fantastic flower and fruit show!
Use this cultivar where you desire the excellence of V. opulus, but have limited space. Of dense habit, 'Compactum' grows slowly to a height and spread of 4-6'. White flowers are followed by large yellow-orange to orange-red fruit. Superb red coloration in the fall. I have to tell you, the varied thrushes just loved these berries when we had one of our unusual snows lasting for a few days this winter.
