Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A wondrous Spirea from France, this 3-4' gracefully mounding shrub offers very attractive foliage, soft-pink as it emerges in spring, before changing to a mottled green and creamy-white, pink-buds open to the ever-popular white flowers of summer; makes an excellent edging along a path. S-PSh/M
S. triloba x S. cantoniensis, Vanhouttei is probably the most popular of all the spireas and normally would be a bit mundane for us, however 'Pink Ice' did catch our eye, the leaves emerge in spring mottled pink and white. This variegation does tend to green out in summer, however its still worthy of garden space.
Not to be confused with "pink eyes" -- which does not conjure as sweet an image (we promise we did not name this plant). Of Japanese origin, these compact shrubs -- to only 3-4' -- produce sweetly variegated, light green, pink, and white streaked leaves on dark stems topped by delicate, pink flowers in spring. Although deciduous, the winter aspect of the shrub is dense and provides good texture. Hardy under most garden conditions from sun to shade and frost hardy possibly as low as USDA zone 3 -- that's where the "ice" part comes in.
