The umbrella pine. These seedlings or cuttings will make a nice evergreen tree. These are a good alternative for the more expensive cultivars. Limited

By: Gossler Farms

Reminiscent of umbrella ribs, whorls of thick, dark-green "leaves" radiate from the stem, giving a tufted look to this unusual, symmetrical 30-70' tree; a very slow growing specimen, it can be held in a large pot for many years; known in Japan as kiyamaki, the branches are placed on graves to lead spirits back to the land of the living. This bold conifer adds a somewhat prehistoric feeling to the landscape with its broad pyramidal habit and long deep green needles arranged in whorls around the branches. Slow growing but long lived, it can reach heights of 30' and more with age. Shopping 15-20" plants in 1 gallon pots.

Long, narrow green needles are soft to the touch. Japanese umbrella pines grow slowly as a young plant and then pick-up steam as they get older reaching 30-50 feet in time. Protect from drying summer winds.

Soft needles, pleasing form, and kind of pre-historic in its overall appearance, Umbrella Pine is somewhat slow-growing, but always in demand from those suppliers who invest in liners annually and hold them for 4-5 years. Best if not crowded or planted in a wet spot, or simply "let go". This is an expensive plant to buy but a profitable one to sell if you're patient and want to offer something other than red maples, crabapples and honeylocust.

The Japanese Umbrella Pine is small pine-like plant is used for its unusual texture and growth habit. On young plants the branches stick straight out but become more pendulous with age. The effect is much like the ribs on an umbrella. The orange, peeling bark is ornamental but usually hidden by the foliage. Provide a moist, acidic soil and protection from the wind.

Slow growing to pyramidal shape, soft foliage with whorls at tips. Okay in containers. Hardy zones 6-8.

Not really a pine at all, this is the only species within its genus. A unique and interesting plant of pyramidal shape. The name comes from leaves that look like pine needles whorled around the stems like the ribs of an umbrella. Very slow growing. At a young age it could be used as a dwarf. It eventually grows 6-12" a year to make an attractive specimen of medium conical size. Does not tolerate lime soil conditions. This unusual plant is one of the most sought after that has come from Japan. We are sure you will want this terrific specimen; it will be one of your most prized possessions. Will eventually reach heights of 60' or more.
