Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A somewhat smaller version of a fabulous plant…2-3’ tall and 3-4’ wide with a compact habit; velvet flower spikes of medium purple late summer till frost are long lasting on the plant, also great cut (fresh or dried); hummer candy! Full sun, well drained soil, drought tolerant. Cut back hard in spring before new growth starts.
Finally, a dwarf selection of the omnipresent Mexican sage! Brand new to the trade, this variety looks and acts like its parent except that it reaches the manageable size of 2' by 3' without pruning. Rich purple-blue fuzzy flowers crown its graceful branches virtually year round in mild climates. The flower color seems to be an intermediate shade between the species and 'Midnight'. Plant in full sun and provide an annual hard shearing to retain a full appearance.
A dwarf form of the popular Mexican Sage bush that grows to only 2'H. This durable drought tolerant perennial puts on amazing show of velvety purple flower spikes beginning in late summer (just in time for the Hummingbirds) and lasting until frost. Mexican Sage bush is a drought tolerant, sun and heat loving reliable clump forming perennial that is considered deer proof. This tough plant is moderately salt tolerant making it a good choice for coastal plantings. Mexican Sage Bush does best where it has excellent drainage, particularly in winter and mulching can help ensure its hardiness in questionable areas. Salvia leucantha's excellent drought tolerance makes it a good choice for containers and xeriscapes.
'Santa Barbara' is a more compact form of S. leucantha, forming 2' shrubs up to 3' wide with age. Grey-green linear foliage is attractive with wands of lavender-blue/ white flowers in Sept-October.
