The foliage of R. pachysanthum is similar to R. pseudochrysanthum but has a lot more indumentum and tomentum. The indumentum is a more tan color rather than silver like R. pseudochysanthum. The soft pink flowers are a bonus each spring.

So typically rhododendron flowers lighten and brighten our landscapes. The special treat here though is the foliage may be more outstanding then the blooms. After the pink trusses fade new growth appears with a heavy coating of tan tomentum and a light tan indumentum. It retains the tomentum for much of the early growing season finally fading to reveal dark, green leaves.

An excellent foliage plant typically with a long-lasting reddish-brown to silvery green indumentum on the upper leaf surface and a deep rust- brown indumentum on the lower – one of the best species for foliage display. White flushed pink flowers often with reddish spots in mid-spring. Easy in sun or shade and relatively heat and cold tolerant. From hand-pollinated seed produced here in the RSBG. Quite variable and we cannot guarantee foliage color.
