This evergreen magnolia has been hardy in NE Portland for 15-20 years. The 20-25’ trees have bluish green foliage on full bushy trees. The ivory white flowers appear in early – mid spring.
Also known as the "smiling forest lily tree", this is one of the best magnolias to arrive from China, though still not easily available. A member of the michelia group which includes some of the most floriferous of the evergreen magnolias, M. maudiae shows off an abundance of large, white, lemon-scented flowers in early spring, and from an early age -- a perfect contrast to the large, blue-green leaves that remain handsome all year long. Fast-growing, reaching 15-20' tall x a somewhat narrow 8-10' wide in 10 or so years. A stunning and rewarding tree for sun to part shade with regular summer water. Frost hardy in upper USDA zone 7. Magnoliaceae
This winter blooming magnolia is small tree very suitable for growing in pots. It produces pure white flowers arranged along the branches.
One of the easier winter blooming evergreen Magnolias to grow in mild climates. Large, 6 in., pure white flowers are very fragrant and arranged along the branches, rather than at branch tips. These will form small trees or good potted specimens. They do well on the West Coast and in the Southeast.
