All hail the drama queen!!! Fabulous deep burgundy leaves arch in a clump to about 2’ wide…flowers of the same hue in summer on erect 20” stalks resemble mini pineapples clinging to the stem. If you want to make a statement, this is the babe! Sun, decent soil, a space of her own to command her kingdom. One of our most popular mouth agape ‘was dat’ plants!
Bold architectural lines, dark-burgundy-turning-green strap-like leaves and in late summer, a 20-30" spike of purple bottle-brush flowers crowned by a ?pineapple?-like tuft of purple foliage; exotic cut flower/container. S/M/GDr
The Pineapple Lily, or Pineapple Flower, is a deciduous perennial bulb native to the temperate regions of South Africa. Coming in a variety of foliage colors, the Pineapple Lily is a tropical looking cousin to the common Hyacinth. The long lasting white to purple flowers appear in summer and are arranged in a spike, topped by a "head" of green leaflike bracts, looking much like some sort of miniature pineapple. This plant offers a tropical flair in the garden and makes a great herbaceous, broad-leaf ornamental for the seasonal garden. While surprisingly cold hardy, this plant is winter deciduous, resting as a bulb which can be dug up and stored in cold winter climates, much like Dahlias or other annuals. In most regions without hard frosts, simply dress the planting area with mulch and they’ll be one of the first plants to return in spring. Cold hardy to zone 6b and above, or to -5 degrees.
This South African bulb is known as the pineapple lily. The leaves get 18"x3' and arc deep rich purple all summer. We grow our several clumps in the fall sun. The flowers are 18" stalks with flowers that look like pineapples. Have been totally hardy for 20+ years.
Dark burgundy, strap-shaped leaves gradually turn green as the flowers fade, then turn burgundy again. Thick maroon stems display maroon buds that open to pink, lupine-like flowers. Best in rich, well-drained soil. Plant in cottage or meadow gardens, or in containers. Loved also for their long lasting cut flowers. Bulbs can be lifted and saved for next year.
Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy' is among the best of all the pineapple lilies with dramatic purple foliage. The bold strap-like leaves form a rosette to two feet wide. In late summer, the clump produces a 20" tall bloom stalk resembling a miniature purple pineapple! Very easy to grow and tolerates a wide range of garden conditions. Full sun for best foliage colour. Grow through a carpet of Geranium 'Ballerina' or Sedum 'Angelina'.
Deep merlot stems and leaves are such an asset to the garden, and such a conversation piece! It's a fabulous contrast plant and focal point, and its summer-blooming stems make long-lasting cut flowers. It's still exciting when the spikes are covered in marble-like burgundy seed pods. As soon as it pushes up, this is one of the most popular plants in the garden every year. The more sun, the more merlot. Drink up!???Ships when dormant. Minimum temperature: 0°F
Spotted as a "Hey, look at that one!" sport in the field of an Easy Coast grower, Sparkling Burgundy was collected and bred for its noteworthy combination of foliage color and tall flower spikes. The leaves sprout a deep burgundy and grow into a two foot wide rosette. Late in the summer, the leaf color lightens to olive green, about time when 20" tall flowering stems, topped with purple tufts, appear. Enjoy the flowers for weeks, then savor the shiny, bead-like purple seeds that develop along the stems. As the season winds down the leaf color flushes back to deep purple, nicely contrasting with other plants' tawny fall foliage.

The sumptuous burgundy-red, semierect rosette of strapping, waxy leaves appears more green as the weather warms. Crowned by a pineapple-like cluster of leaves, densely set starry flowers envelope thick, cylindrical maroon spikes. The purple blossoms display unique greenish tones, and add dramatic, long lasting highlights to arrangements. Showy persistent seed capsules follow.
Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy' is one of the darkest plants in my garden. The dark narrow leaves emerge early/mid spring with an exceptionally dark burgundy color. It looks similar to a bromeliad. The strap like leaves grow to 2 or 3 feet tall. A spike of flowers emerge late in the summer with light pink/ white flowers held up 2 or 3 feet in the center of the plant. The foliage may turn a dark bronze by the end of the season. A light mulching can help protect the crown once dormant in the fall. We over winter our plants easily outside in a zone 6 climate. This is a great plant to line the boarders of any landscape. Foliage: Dark Narrow purple foliage Flowers: A spike with white and pink flowers in late summer Height: 2 to 3 feet
The Burgundy Standard for Eucomis. Deep purple foliage and gorgeous similarly colored flowers, which if you can bring yourself to do it, make an excellent cut flower. (We have inadvertantly broken some off and know this to be true) Easy. Mulch if cold winter.
Burgundy sword shaped leaves with burgundy flowers.
This bulbous member of thelily family has burgundy strap like foliage topped with sturdy purple stems bearing clusters of purple tinted stems topped with clusters of pale green florests clustered in a way to resemble a pineapple. Easy to store winter bulbs in zones where this plant is not winter hardy. Grows 18-24' tall and like most bulbs prefers a well drained soil in full sun.
