A widespread cactus -- with too many synonyms and common names to list -- inhabiting varied habitats in the western and southwestern states and in Mexico. Cultivated for its cup-shaped, orange to dark red flowers that appear on mature plants in late spring / early summer, inviting all hummingbirds to a feat. Upright, to 12-18" tall x 18-24" wide, the dense, cylindrical branches well decorated with long, white-gray spines. Blooms best with full sun. Enjoys summer water; dislikes winter wet, requiring good drainage and/or protection from winter rains. Frost hardy in USDA zone 8.
