One of the best garden Ceanothus (to 6' x 6') because it has densely arranged dark-green leaves, because of its attractive clusters of deep-blue flowers, and because it tolerates some summer water. S/M-D/GDr
Big arching evergreen shrub with shiny dark green foliage, fast growing 6-8’ high and 8-10’ wide. Dazzling display of deep cobalt blue bloom April and May is a jaw dropper! This old cultivar tolerates heavy soil and summer irrigation better than most of the genus so is more garden friendly. Provides cover for birds and seeds attract quail, finches and more. Full sun, drought tolerant, deer resistant.
One of the oldest and most dazzling of all Ceanothus hybrids, 'Concha' premiers a spectacular spring display of deep cobalt blue clustered flowers unfurling from tight pinkish red buds. Gracefully arching branches can withstand light pruning and are clad in lustrous, small dark green textured leaves, which etch an attractive evergreen foil. Persisting some 15 to 25 years in a well-drained site with little or no irrigation, but amiable to minimal summer water and heavier soils, this adaptable Ceanothus can be employed as a dense hedge, a specimen shrub or for erosion control on slopes. Birds savor its seeds and seek its stately shelter, while Mediterraneans make worthy companions.
Chonca California Mountain Lilac [Tree Form].
Ceanothus 'Concha', one of the oldest and best hybrid ceanothus. This shrub grows to about 4' h x 4' w. Concha will grow into a mounding shrub, or can be shaped into a pretty small tree. This vigorous grower tolerates many soil types and will be long lived in most gardens if you avoid summer water. This cultivar is has dense foliage and the 1" flower clusters are reddish in bud and dark blue when open, March-April. Provides nectar for bees and butterflies. Charles Samms discovered this old-timer in 1949 in his nursery in San Dimas, California. 'Concha' is a hybrid of Ceanothus impressus and Ceanothus papillosus var. roweanus.
Medium-sized shrub to 8' with an equal spread. Magenta buds open into vibrant, cobalt blue flowers on arching branches. 'Concha' has dark foliage and a dense mounding habit. Although best suited to coastal environments, it will tolerate a wide range of garden conditions. One of the most reliable Ceanothus cultivars on the market. Hardy to 10 °F. Garden origin.
One of the large and gorgeous ceanothus shrubs, evergreen to 6' tall and spreading to 10' or more. Small, dark leaves and flowers that are red in bud and open to dark blue in early summer. Best in sun with lean soil and very little summer water once established. Frost hardy to USDA zone 8.
Concha is regarded by many as one of real stars of the genus and the fact that the tasteful David Mason and Susie Grimm of Hedgerows nursery chose it as hedging for their home is good enough for us. Vibrant dark blue flowers from magenta buds. Water only to establish.
