WOW. All Astelias are not created equal. Some are MUCH hardier to cold including this amazing selection with silver gilded leaves brushed with bronze. Undamaged 10 °F, with strong winds. It has thrived in many gardens in Portland for years. To 2' tall and forming an evergreen clump as wide. RICH, well drained soil with regular water in summer. Avoid hot soil. Full sun to woodland conditions. GREAT PLANT. May be hardier than 10 °F.

Coming from the west side of New Zealand's South Island, this vaguely Phormium-like plant makes a beautiful clump of arching, silvery leaves with a distinct reddish tint that is more pronounced in full sun. To 2' tall by 3' wide, it is great for a rock garden or any garden that emphasizes form, foliage and winter color. It is tolerant of sun or partial shade but should be given excellent drainage to achieve full cold-hardiness. It is also happy in a container. Still quite rare in cultivation, but we finally have enough to sell.

A relatively recent escapee from New Zealand...(no, we don't mean it has invasive potential; New Zealanders are generally very courteous). Very pretty, clumping rosettes, roughly 18" tall spreading to 2' with downy covered leaves, adding hues of gold and silver tending toward maroon with winter's coolness. Slightly slower growing for us than A. n. 'Red Gem', but a very nice complement. You need them both. Full sun for best color as well. Winter color at its best in cooler climates. Regular water. Great container plant. One gallon specimens. Undamaged to at least the low teens °F, possibly colder.
