Nursery contributed plant descriptions

Agave parryi is a popular garden plant because of its compact rosettes as well as the way its silvery-gray leaves contrast with its black teeth and terminal spines. The stubby, almost flat-topped rosette looks like an artichoke and which is why it is referred to as the Artichoke Agave.

Can be used as an accent in the waterwise landscape or a unique groundcover in mass plantings. Full sun to light shade, well-drained (essential), sandy/gritty soil, tolerates dry soils and drought.

This plant has been grown in a 6 inch pot. You will receive a very similar plant to the one in the picture. The plant is shipped "semi-dry-root" (with some dirt to help protect roots).

Zn 5. Gray leaves. Sharp spines.
Fabulous artichoke shaped agave with blue green skin and purple spines. A structural masterpiece.
Dramatic bluish-grey succulent foliage from compact rosettes. One of the most widespread and hardy agave species, A. parryi can withstand minus 29 Celsius. In our region protect from winter rain with extremely sharp drainage or overhead cover. Plants bloom once -- around the age of 20 -- but produce lots of pups to keep your clump going! We also grow var. truncata and var. huachucensis.
Agave parryi parryi Parry's agave or mescal agave is a slow-growing agave native to Arizona, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. The leaves are grey green and have a spine at the tip. One of the distinguishing features is that the point on the tip, which is typically dark tan, brown, or black, is darker than the leaf. The rosette grows as large as 1 to 2 feet in diameter. Parry's Agave is evergreen. Mature plants produce a twelve-foot stalk with bright yellow blooms. They are monocarpic.
Full Sun to Partial Sun. Outdoor. Up tp 15' tall spike with Orange to Yellow Flowers.

I’m loathe to describe plants as goods instead of, well, PLANTS (I’ve heard people refer to plants as “brands” instead of cultivars or species more than a few times. Scary!) but I still feel compelled to say that I think Agave parryi looks like it was designed rather than grown. Beautiful symmetry & form, compact size, plus those grey blue leaves & black thorns? It’s quite a package: slick, modern & it needs little in the way of water or care or thought. Grows from 1-3’ high & wide. Some forms sucker, some do not. Give it plenty of sun & a well drained spot if your soil is heavy & wet. If you’re very patient, you will get to see the 20’ tall blooming spike, with its golden yellow flowers. After blooming, the rosette will die. (So it goes.) This Mexican species is used to produce mescal beer. Ambitious home brewers, please report back to us with your results!
