Agapetes is an epiphytic Blueberry relative which lives in trees and develops a woody bulbous base called a lignotuber. This is a cross between A. serpens and A. rugosa which has beautiful pendant light pink flowers with darker pink chevrons. Tender here, easy inside over winter.

Hailing from the moist forested foothills of the Himalayas, this intriguing Ericaceae family member is a vigorous hybrid between incurvata and serpens that bears lustrous Huckleberry-like foliage. Large woody tubers give way to upright and arching branches neatly lined with red-suffused new growth and slender green leathery leaves. In an enchanting summertime display, pendulous fairy-tale flowers, each embellished by a tiny maroon checkerboard pattern, resemble narrow, 5-sided creamy white lanterns. Superb as a hanging container specimen or elevated along a pathway amid ferns, 'Ludgvan Cross' prefers bright shade, well drained acid soil and a sheltered spot.

Shrubby with arching upright branches to 3’, small huckleberry like evergreen leaves with new growth blushed generously with red. Surreal dangling tubular cream flowers in waxy clusters June August are intricately etched with layers of horizontal zigzag rose red bands – gorgeous!! This blueberry relative enjoys moist acidic soil and good drainage in bright shade. Local rhododendron aficionados tell me this is hardy to at least single digits.
