Nursery contributed plant descriptions

A columnar white pine with dense foliage and a more narrow habit than 'Fastigiata.' Another introduction by Greg Williams. The mother plant is certainly a beauty!
Perfect for narrow plantings, this evergreen pine tree grows in a narrow column with branches that point up rather than out. The needles are arranged in bundles of 5 and have a beautiful silvery-blue color that looks especially good when contrasted against bright yellow evergreens. In ten years a tree will typically grow 8-12 feet tall but only 3 feet in diameter with dense branching throughout the lower two thirds and an open top that highlights the individual 'candlestick' shaped stems.
'Stowe Pillar' trees will maintain a nearly perfect shape with little to no pruning and is a perfect choice for a low-maintenance plant. They will grow much better in well drained or rocky soils but tolerate compacted soils much better than other pines we have grown. If you have highly compacted soil like fine silt or clay you can mix shredded landscape bark into the soil before planting to help keep the roots well aerated.

'Stowe Pillar' is an improvement over 'Fastigiata' because 'Stowe Pillar' is narrower with stronger branches that are arranged more uniformly around the tree. The strong branches makes this variety much less susceptible to snow or storm damage. The smaller size makes it a good option for container and patio plants as well.

An improved form of Eastern white pine that is much narrower than 'Fastigiata'. Soft, thin needles form a dense upright that works well in tight spaces or as a specimen. Its tight branching also makes it more resistant to wet snow loads. Found by Greg Williams in Vermont, near Stowe Mountain.
