Baby Lace Japanese Maple has small, delicate threadlike leaves that emerge red and orange in spring. Fall colors are orange and red. The finely dissected leaves become smaller as the tree ages. Baby Lace Japanese maple is the first lace-leaf witches broom to be discovered.
The small, finely dissected leaves of this slow-growing laceleaf Japanese maple are very thin and delicate so many layers of colors show through. Spring growth emerges reddish-orange and quickly changes to bronzy green with purple-burgundy margins for sum
This is a very small shrubby (non weeping) plant. It will probably get 3'-4' tall. The leaves are very lacy and have a reddish cast all summer.
'Baby Lace' is a delicate laceleaf maple with extra small leaves. These leaves actually get smaller in age until they are the size of a thumbnail! Its leaves emerge orange and red in spring, quickly changing to green for the summer. Fall colors are orange-red to pink-red. This cultivar is vigorous but dwarf, only growing to 3 feet. 'Baby Lace' forms a small, dense shrub that is great for bonsai or small gardens. Rick Rey of the Delaware Valley Agricultural School found 'Baby Lace' in the early 1980s as a witches' broom, and was named by Edward Rodd of Raraflora Nursery in Kinterfield, Pennsylvania.
The highly desirable Baby Lace is the first lace leaf witches broom to be discovered.The finely dissected leaves are half the size of normal dissectum leaves in the first year, becoming smaller with age until reduced to the size of a thumbnail. The leaves emerge a reddish orange in the spring, becoming bronze-green for the summer, and turning orange-red to pink-red in the fall. During the summer, the orange-red new growth is an attractive color contrast to the darker bronze-green mature leaves.
