Iris tectorum has lovely, large, six inch wide blue flowers with white and purple markings in mid spring. The foliage is arranged in fans of narrow, lance-shaped, ribbed, glossy, upright leaves that add a nice texture to the garden. Commonly called roof iris because it has, in the past, been grown on thatched roofs in both Japan and China. Use in rock gardens or in large drifts. Drought and deer tolerant. A lovely, perennial iris that does well in the heat here in Zone 8B in dry shade. It has fans of glossy green, 12? leaves and beautiful lavender flowers, 2-3? across, with dark veins and a white crest on each fall. Blooms in early summer. It spreads readily, quickly producing a nice mass.
