    About the genus

Tricyrtis, commonly known as toad-lilies, are herbaceous perennials in the lily family, Liliaceae, native to Asia. The common name stems from the speckled flowers of many species, and the warty-looking nectaries. The flowers are intricate and unusual, and many species bloom at the end of summer and into fall when little else flowers in the shade garden. The flowers are born on deciduous, leafy stems, at the ends or in the leaf axils depending on the species. The leaves may be speckled or variegated, providing interest before the flowers appear. In winter, the stems die back to the creeping rhizomes. In mild climates, small new shoots may overwinter with basal leaves before rising up in spring.

    Uses

Toad-lilies shine in woodlands and shady borders, providing fall interest with their beautiful flowers. Toad-lilies are also at home in cottage gardens and meadows, and can be massed, naturalized, or used as accents. They make unique additions to arrangements as cut flowers, but leave some for pollinators as they enjoy toad-lilies, too. Species with arching habits and flowers held beneath the leaves, like Tricyrtis macranthopsis are best sited in a raised position like a slope, on top of a rock wall, in a stumpery, or in a container. This makes it easier to view the flowers and shows off the graceful draping stems.

    Care

Toad-lilies prefer partial to full shade, with protection from hot afternoon sun. Plant them in rich, well-drained soil, mulch, and water regularly for best performance. Tricyrtis hirta will tolerate clay soils. Toad-lilies are deer resistant, but rabbits may eat the leaves and flower buds. The stems may be cut back in fall after they die for a cleaner look.
