Here is a selection of some new and old crushes.<\/h2>\n<h3>Oddities and rarities:<\/h3>\n<h4>Alocasia &#8216;Red Secret&#8217;<\/h4>\n<p>First up on my list of plants making me swoon is Red Jewel Alocasia. Ooh la la. <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/57591\/alocasia-cuprea-red-secret\/\">Alocasia &#8216;Red Secret&#8217;<\/a> lends an exotic and tropical look to gardens with metallic maroon-brown leaves. Photo by Little Prince of Oregon.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/57591\/alocasia-cuprea-red-secret\/\" class=\"button\">Shop Alocasia &#8216;Red Secret&#8217;<\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Santolina rosmarinifolia &#8216;Lemon Fizz&#8217;<\/h4>\n<p>A longtime favorite plant of mine which deserves a home in all gardens is <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/13042\/santolina-rosmarinifolia-lemon-fizz\/\">Santolina rosmarinifolia &#8216;Lemon Fizz&#8217;<\/a>. I first got into Santolina when studying about medieval monastic gardens. It would provide evergreen structure and color to the lovingly tended monk&#8217;s herb gardens. It smells wonderful and in Spring is covered in charming little flowers.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_98538\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_98538\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-98538\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/08142715\/Santolina-rosmarinifolia-Lemon-Fizz.jpeg\" alt=\"Close up of chartreuse, twiggy mound-like plant growing in gravel.\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_98538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/13042\/santolina-rosmarinifolia-lemon-fizz\/\">Santolina rosmarinifolia &#8216;Lemon Fizz&#8217;<\/a> has a mounding habit which works well in naturalistic plantings but can also be pruned into more formal shape, even topiary. Photo by Little Prince of Oregon.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/13042\/santolina-rosmarinifolia-lemon-fizz\/\" class=\"button\">Shop Santolina rosmarinifolia &#8216;Lemon Fizz&#8217;<\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Podophyllum &#8216;Spotty Dotty&#8217;<\/h4>\n<p>Next up is the marvelously weird mayapple, <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/52886\/podophyllum-spotty-dotty\/\">Podophyllum &#8216;Spotty Dotty,&#8217;<\/a> which really thrives in the Portland rain. It makes me think of mint chocolate chip ice cream with its pale green leaves dotted in burgundy. Photo by Little Prince of Oregon.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/12460\/dianthus-barbatus-nigrescens-group-sooty\/\" class=\"button\">Shop Dianthus &#8216;Sooty&#8217;<\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Unusual and wonderful groundcovers:<\/h3>\n<h4>Ledebouria cooperi<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/9000\/ledebouria-cooperi\/\">Ledebouria cooperi<\/a> is a Spring showstopper from South Africa which has striped grassy foliage and is adorned by racemes of star-shaped pink flowers. Photo by Little Prince of Oregon.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/9000\/ledebouria-cooperi\/\" class=\"button\">Shop Ledebouria cooperi<\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Muehlenbeckia axillaris<\/h4>\n<p>Among my favorite groundcovers is <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/37393\/muehlenbeckia-axillaris\/\">Muehlenbeckia axillaris, <\/a>also know as Mattress Vine, for its ground-hugging growth habit. It&#8217;s a vigorous grower which can easily engulf large areas so is best used with some caution and intent. I love the way it&#8217;s used here&#8211;confined to an area and then allowed to really do its thing.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_98546\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_98546\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-98546\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/08141758\/Muehlenbeckia-axillaris.jpeg\" alt=\"A mossy textured ground edged with a short bamboo fence.\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_98546\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\"><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/37393\/muehlenbeckia-axillaris\/\">Muehlenbeckia axillaris<\/a> is a fast growing groundcover and climber that can withstand some light foot traffic. Photo by Anna Kullgren.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/37393\/muehlenbeckia-axillaris\/\" class=\"button\">Shop Muehlenbeckia axillaris<\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Sagina subulata<\/h4>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/13444\/sagina-subulata\/\">Sagina subulata<\/a>, also known as Irish Moss, is a charming evergreen or semi evergreen groundcover. Like Muehlenbeckia axillaris it can tolerate some foot traffic and provides a pretty, low-growing tufted texture.
