Entering this world-famous Oregon nursery that I am so lucky to have regular access to really does give me the overwhelming feeling of being a kid in a candy store. It&#8217;s hard to know where to look. Each plant feels like a treasure. Read on for some of the things that caught my eye.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Fall garden beauties at Cistus<\/h2>\n<p>First up, I spent time browsing the tables in the main area of the nursery. Since I often visit Cistus in the lush, tropical splendor of summer, I don&#8217;t associate it with fall interest, but wow, there were so many plants really shining this season.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Callistemon &#8216;Best Blue&#8217; (Lemon Bottlebrush)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96921 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/08142727\/CallistemonBestBlue.jpg\" alt=\"Fine-leaved blue foliage and thin reddish branches of Callistemon 'Best Blue'.\" width=\"4272\" height=\"2848\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/6439\/callistemon-pallidus-best-blue\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Callistemon pallidus &#8216;Best Blue&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a Cistus introduction and one they refer to as a collector\u2019s Bottlebrush. Even without seeing this in bloom I\u2019m sold on its very handsome blue foliage with contrasting <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/tags\/red-stems\/\">russet stems<\/a> which would really be a standout if positioned against a background of <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/tags\/fall-color\/\">fall&#8217;s vibrant leaves.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Euonymus europaeus &#8216;Red Ace&#8217; (European Spindle Tree)<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97697\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_97697\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97697\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142719\/EuonymusEuropaeusRedAce.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up view of small pendulous pink seed pods hanging on a single branch with rain water droplets dripping off them and a dark green blurred background. \" width=\"4272\" height=\"2848\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_97697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">The striking pink seed pods of Euonymus Europaeus Red Ace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/6538\/euonymus-europaeus-red-ace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euonymus europaeus &#8216;Red Ace&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was really making me weak in the knees with its dripping, red pendulous seed pods. Holy moly. I can see<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> why Cistus says it\u2019s the most expensive plant fellow nursery-owner, the late Dorothy Rodal, ever purchased. Evidently it also has <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/?attribute=Flower%20Color&#038;val=chartreuse&#038;14=163&#038;filtered=True&#038;is_for_sale=true\">chartreuse spring flowers<\/a> and the winter seed pods open to reveal tiny orange fruit known as capsules. Unbelievable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. Parthenocissus inserta (Woodbine)<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97695\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_97695\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97695\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142720\/ParthenosisisInserta.jpg\" alt=\"Bright pinkish red serrated leaves on thin branches.\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_97695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Stunning foliage on Parthenocissus inserta.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/26410\/parthenocissus-inserta\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parthenocissus inserta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Grape Woodbine was showing off shockingly red foliage. This is a fun one to think about planting around a doorway. You\u2019d need to provide some support because evidently it is a twining plant that lacks the sticky pads of related Virginia Creepers. Thank goodness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Yucca rostrata (Beaked Yucca)<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97693\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_97693\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97693\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142720\/YuccaRostrata.jpg\" alt=\"A mature trunked yucca rostrata in a display garden featuring grey foliage\" width=\"2848\" height=\"4272\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_97693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Yucca Rostrata at the display garden at Cistus Nursery.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/30825\/yucca-rostrata-black-gap-tx-collection\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yucca rostrata<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the hardiest tree yuccas down to USDA zone 5 and just out of this world, forming an impressive trunk topped with what Cistus describes as \u201ca rounded halo\u201d. The beautiful blue-green foliage is a knockout that really pops against the warm toned fall leaves. I read that yuccas have become so coveted that there\u2019s now a big poaching business and plants are being dug up from public and private land. What a sad business. Luckily we can obtain these ethically seed-grown specimens from Cistus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5. Acorus gramineus &#8216;Variegatus&#8217; (Variegated Sweet Flag)<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97696\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_97696\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97696\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142719\/AcorusGramineusVariegatus.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of thin grassy foliage in variegated chartreuse and dark green.\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_97696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">The fine-leaved foliage of soft Acorus Gramineus &#8216;Variegatus&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/6338\/acorus-gramineus-variegatus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acorus gramineus &#8216;Variegatus,&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with its tiny, grassy blades that are so soft and delicate, really packs a punch of vivid chartreuse and is another plant which was really popping in the autumn light. I like the thought of this one in containers where you can really appreciate the fine texture closer to eye level.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The tenders<\/h2>\n<p>Next, moving through the greenhouse where the selection of tender plants are kept under cover, I spotted many that would make striking houseplants, which helped assuage my sadness about summer&#8217;s end and the arrival of fall. Way to bring the party inside for those of us living in zones where much of the garden will be sleeping for a few months.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Begonia maculata &#8216;Cadbury&#8217; (Angel Wing Begonia)<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97691\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_97691\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97691\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142721\/BegoniaCadbury.jpg\" alt=\"A close-up of dark green and emerging chartreuse lancet-shaped leaves of a houseplant covered in white polka dots.\" width=\"4272\" height=\"2848\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_97691\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Polka-dot begonia &#8216;Cadbury&#8217; at Cistus Nursery, Portland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/58125\/begonia-cadbury\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begonia maculata &#8216;Cadbury&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an adorable polka dot begonia and Cistus says that the mature form of this cane style gives the plant the appearance of a cluster of palms. AMAZING! I want one so bad.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Calathea lancifolia (Rattlesnake Plant)<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97692\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_97692\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97692\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142720\/CalatheaLancifolia.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of long feather-shaped leaves in milky green with dark green spots that look hand-painted.\" width=\"4272\" height=\"2848\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_97692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Calathea Lancifolia makes a stunning houseplant.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And \u2018Cadbury\u2019 was extra popping next to the stunning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/41953\/calathea-lancifolia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calathea lancifolia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It looks hand-painted and that vivid yet creamy green is just delicious. Cistus describes it as easy and forgiving. This plant really speaks my language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. Abutilon Chiffon (Flowering Maple)<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96922\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_96922\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-96922 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/08142726\/AbutilonChiffon.jpg\" alt=\"Butter yellow flowers and flower buds on abutilon 'Chiffon'\" width=\"4272\" height=\"2848\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_96922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Abutilon &#8216;Chiffon&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abutilon Chiffon caught my eye with it\u2019s large bell-shaped flowers and pale yellow color. A bit more subdued than <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/genus\/abutilon\/\">other Abutilons<\/a> which somehow made it even more charming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Begonia &#8216;Mr. O&#8217;Flaherty&#8217;<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96923\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_96923\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-96923 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/08142726\/BegoniaMr.OFlaherty.jpg\" alt=\"Large oak-leaf shaped leaves in grey and dark green and burgundy on Begonia 'Mr.O'Flaherty' in a pot.\" width=\"4272\" height=\"2848\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_96923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Begonia &#8216;Mr.O&#8217;Flaherty&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/58132\/begonia-mr-oflaherty\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begonia &#8216;Mr. O&#8217;Flaherty&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is possibly hardy to as low as USDA Zone 9 but no matter as this one is so handsome I\u2019d prefer to spend the winter indoors with him as a houseplant. What a dapper plant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5. Lysionotus &#8216;Pudding&#8217; (Cliff Flower)<\/h3>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_96925\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_96925\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-96925 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142726\/LysionotusPudding.jpg\" alt=\"Yellow flowering Lysionotus Pudding vine.\" width=\"4272\" height=\"2848\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_96925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Lysionotus &#8216;Pudding&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cistus recommends Lysionotus &#8216;Pudding&#8217; as a great pot stuffer for shady situations where it\u2019s frost hardy to 25F but again this would be a swell <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/tags\/houseplant\/\">houseplant<\/a> I think.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The cactus house<\/h2>\n<p>And finally, in the cactus house at Cistus, as always there were numerous goodies for the spiky plant collectors among us which are always covetable, fall through spring.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97739\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_97739\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97739\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142719\/CistusEchinopsisDisplay.jpg\" alt=\"A cluster of aged terracotta pots with a variety of spiky looking desert plants.\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_97739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Plant display in the Cistus Cactus House<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<h3>1. Not to mention its very bold\u00a0 and upright architectural shape. I\u2019ve killed this beautiful plant before because I was overly optimistic about its hardiness but I want to try again indoors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<h3>2. It really did seem to glow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. Cryptanthus &#8216;Zebra&#8217; (Earth Star)<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97389\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_97389\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97389\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142722\/CryptanthusZebrinus.jpg\" alt=\"Close up view of the strikingly white and dark green Zebra or Zebrinus variety of Cryptanthus.\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_97389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Cryptanthus &#8216;Zebra&#8217; is a an eye-catching plant for the tropical collector.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I just learned that these bromeliads are known as Earth Stars. I love that. This variety, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/29014\/cryptanthus-zebrinus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cryptanthus &#8216;Zebra Star,&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would be so incredible in terracotta as a patio plant and a stunning houseplant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Opuntia &#8216;Kelly&#8217;s Choice&#8217; (Prickly Pear Cactus)<\/h3>\n<p>Cistus Nursery grows one of the most impressively varied <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/genus\/opuntia\/\">Opuntia collections<\/a> around. <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/17203\/opuntia-kellys-choice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opuntia &#8216;Kelly&#8217;s Choice&#8217;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seems like a great choice for an Opuntia nube like me. It has all the hallmark traits of a Prickly Pair I desire such as big, wide paddles, loads of vibrant watermelon-colored Spring flowers, an upright growth habit up to 6\u2019 tall, and given sharp drainage hardiness to zone 5a.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97694\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_97694\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-97694\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/08142720\/OpuntiaKellysChoice.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of paddle leaves on a cactus plant with many more cactus nursery starts in the background.\" width=\"4272\" height=\"2848\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_97694\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Kelly&#8217;s Choice Prickly Pear is a choice pick for a hardy and beautiful opuntia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Echinopsis oxygona (Easter Lily Cactus)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This cactus-curious gardener was really taken in by the display of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/14945\/echinopsis-oxygona\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Echinopsis oxygona<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> arranged in a tray and brought up closer to eye level in a pot stacked on top of another overturned pot.
