Of course, that means I hardly ever go&#8211;because, after all, I can go any time I like. It reminds me of a million years ago when I\u00a0had a free season ski pass at Timberline on Mt. Hood. <a title=\"Megan Hansen's plantlust.com blog posts\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/blog\/author\/megan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Megan<\/a>&#8216;s dad was a part time ski-instructor there, and it came with the territory.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s amazing I learned to ski at all\u00a0considering how much time I dedicated to Blue Ox\u00a0Bar in <a title=\"Timberline Lodge, Oregon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timberline_Lodge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Timberline Lodge<\/a>. Ai yi yi. Why must they waste youth on the young? Now that I know I&#8217;m mortal, I&#8217;m less inclined to take risks involving head and body trauma. I know, this is a pitiful picture of me below, but I&#8217;m just saying. (I hope you&#8217;re not weary\u00a0of me mentioning\u00a0this injury. It&#8217;s with me every day, and I&#8217;m always planning around limitations of headache and fatigue. Visible from my sick bay.\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s been\u00a0ages\u00a0since I last skied. And even when I think of\u00a0how much fun it might be, I consider\u00a0the time, travel, and expense\u00a0necessary to\u00a0reach\u00a0the\u00a0slope&#8217;s edge&#8211;for\u00a0that brief glorious run\u00a0downhill. That&#8217;s\u00a0a lot of lost gardening hours. Sure enough, no peanut gallery to object\u00a0<em>and<\/em> a parking place right beside the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, I didn&#8217;t have my pass with me&#8211;because I&#8217;d switched purses before leaving home. I always forget essentials when I switch handbags, but in my defense, the smaller bag is much better\u00a0for waltzing around downtown hands-free.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9564\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_9564\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9564\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/01144744\/IMG_1460.jpg\" alt=\"Heavy bag and not heavy bag. I almost made the mistake of going on opening day. Saved by\u00a0the Yard, Garden, and Patio show the same day&#8211;where I attended two seminars, one by <a title=\"Roger Gossler&#039;s Guide to Best Hardy Shrubs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hachettebookgroup.com\/imprint\/timber-press\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roger Gossler<\/a> and another by <a title=\"Vanessa Gardner Nagel\" href=\"https:\/\/seasonsgardendesign.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vanessa Gardner Nagel<\/a>. Much better. In fact, Vanessa&#8217;s talk got me thinking about mass plantings and its\u00a0importance in the garden. I knew that, because little Ms. Megan taught me ages ago. Cast Iron Plant is so good, whatever the variety.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Lan Su Groundcovers<\/h2>\n<p>Lan Su groundcovers are spectacular, and so many of them. I realized with all of these I may periodically\u00a0conflate Ophiopogon and Liriope and Acorus&#8211;even Carex. Understandable, no? I don&#8217;t have any Camellia in my yard, but this would be a dandy. I like its attitude. There&#8217;s an <a title=\"Plants at Lan Su Chinese Gardens\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lansugarden.org\/content\/CI_assets\/Lan_Su_Fall_Plant_Guide_2015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">online guide to some of the garden&#8217;s plants<\/a>, but not all the plants&#8211;at least not that I&#8217;ve discovered yet.
