I&#8217;m going to start with\u00a0a &#8220;favorite&#8221; that demonstrates what an odd winter this had been \u2013\u00a0weather-wise \u2013\u00a0for a great deal of the United States.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The comment came from Rhode Island: &#8220;Well, I suppose that the blooming cherry tree up the street is my favorite zone 6a winter interest plant this balmy year. We have low 20&#8217;s in the forecast this week so these open blooms will like get burnt to a crisp. Spring will be anticlimactic here as nearly everything has bloomed already: Okame cherries, all the prunus mume, daffodils etc.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The weather is always a topic of discussion for us gardeners, right? Onward, to&#8230;Snowdrops. I have a dwarf zebra at the side door that makes a nice rustle sound when there is wind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However some were\u00a0disappointed\u00a0by their grasses: &#8220;Since I garden in pots now I have to choose carefully. I have a <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/6894\/brachyglottis-greyi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brachyglottis greyi<\/a>\u00a0that is looking great, so far, and my olive tree looks as wonderful as it did all summer. \u00a0Rosemary and bamboo always hold up well. \u00a0The grasses are sad however, much too wet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8876\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_8876\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145125\/Brachyglottis-greyi-Loree-Bohl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-8876 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145125\/Brachyglottis-greyi-Loree-Bohl.jpg\" alt=\"Brachyglottis greyi Loree Bohl\" width=\"898\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145125\/Brachyglottis-greyi-Loree-Bohl.jpg 898w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145125\/Brachyglottis-greyi-Loree-Bohl-263x300.jpg 263w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 898px) 100vw, 898px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_8876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Brachyglottis greyi &#8211; Loree Bohl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/4108\/ajuga-reptans-burgundy-glow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Burgundy Glow Ajuga<\/a> was mentioned for its timely color: &#8220;A common tough plant that really stands out when others are dormant. \u00a0A pop of burgundy, purple and red tones.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pale pink\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/#\/raw=Schizostylis%20coccinea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schizostylis coccinea<\/a> (Cape Lily\/Flag Lily) was recommended and came with a story. &#8220;They are so beautiful and delicate looking &#8211; it&#8217;s hard to believe that they can survive everything that winter weather throws at them. I first came across these 35 years ago when my new husband took me to spend Christmas with my in-laws. Mum-in-law put a few of these exotic looking blooms in our bedroom and I could hardly believe that she had picked them from her garden. It is now a tradition that we have pink schizostylis on our breakfast table on Christmas Day &#8211; and I pick them from my own garden. A clump of these cannot fail to lift the spirits!&#8221; Hmm&#8230;fresh flowers in December? I might have to look into this one.<\/p>\n<p>Sage (<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/#\/raw=Salvia%20officinalis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Salvia officinalis<\/a>)\u00a0was also praised for it&#8217;s beauty when other plants have succumbed to the force of winter: &#8220;Even though we are buried in snow right now, my favorite plant still holds it own. My favorites are my sage plants. They keep their leaves all winter and never miss a beat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8952\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_8952\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145112\/Salvia-officinalis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-8952 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145112\/Salvia-officinalis.jpg\" alt=\"Salvia officinalis\" width=\"1024\" height=\"773\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145112\/Salvia-officinalis.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145112\/Salvia-officinalis-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_8952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Salvia officinalis, still in 4&#8243; nursery pots &#8211; Loree Bohl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One person wrote about the beauty of a cone-flower (<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/#\/raw=Echinacea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Echinacea<\/a>) seed-head, saying: &#8220;I love cone flower heads in the winter, they are my favorite because when snow falls on them, the snow looks like hats on the flower head.&#8221; I&#8217;ve cheated and shared a photo of the blooms, because it&#8217;s all I had available \u2013 however the middle photo on <a href=\"http:\/\/penelopedia.blogspot.com\/2010\/11\/first-snow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this blog post<\/a> illustrates what she&#8217;s talking about quite nicely.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8867\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_8867\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145133\/Echinacea-Coconut-Lime-Loree-Bohl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-8867 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145133\/Echinacea-Coconut-Lime-Loree-Bohl.jpg\" alt=\"Echinacea 'Coconut Lime' Loree Bohl\" width=\"1024\" height=\"791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145133\/Echinacea-Coconut-Lime-Loree-Bohl.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145133\/Echinacea-Coconut-Lime-Loree-Bohl-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_8867\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Echinacea &#8216;Coconut Lime&#8217; &#8211; Loree Bohl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now I have to admit this one is a bit of a head-scratcher: <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/10550\/euphorbia-griffithii-fireglow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Euphorbia griffithii &#8216;Fireglow&#8217;<\/a>. In my garden it disappears\u00a0over the winter months, returning with fresh growth in the spring and bright orange blooms around April. I must say I&#8217;m jealous.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The plants that get me through the winter here in Sonoma County are the succulents.
