The hook to get a\u00a0reply was the\u00a0chance to win a plant lust tote bag. Silly me! I thought this would mean\u00a0a few\u00a0one, or two, word replies \u2013 you know\u00a0&#8220;just the facts ma&#8217;am.&#8221;\u00a0But you are plant people after all, which means you love to talk about plants. And I love that about you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There were multiple votes for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/#\/genus=Hamamelis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamamelis<\/a> (aka witch hazel), blooming as it does in the winter months. The flowers are a welcome sight, but the scent is downright heavenly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8858\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_8858\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145140\/winter-interest-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-8858 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145140\/winter-interest-2.jpg\" alt=\"winter interest 2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"643\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145140\/winter-interest-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145140\/winter-interest-2-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145140\/winter-interest-2-400x250.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_8858\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Hamamelis x intermedia &#8216;Early Bright&#8217; &#8211; Loree Bohl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Interestingly only two\u00a0other plants were mentioned for their\u00a0scent, one being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michelia_doltsopa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michelia doltsopa<\/a>. Searching to learn more about this Magnolia relative, I happened upon a love-letter of sorts, on the blog A Growing Obsession. Read it <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/?p=37560\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> &#8211; but be warned \u2013\u00a0you might just find yourself\u00a0in plant lust, and this one&#8217;s only hardy to USDA Zone 9.<\/p>\n<p>Of course the reliable winter bloomer Helleborus was frequently mentioned.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/10662\/helleborus-argutifolius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helleborus argutifolius<\/a> by name: &#8220;not only does this Helleborus behave so well all through the year, it doesn&#8217;t even blink or shrug during a heat wave or an Arctic blast. \u00a0And this week I already noticed flower buds starting to open for the winter show. All that bright, limey, chartreusey color in the middle of winter is eye candy for me. While I don&#8217;t grow that particular\u00a0Manzanita\u00a0I can vouch for the beauty of all\u00a0Arctostaphylos in the winter. The sexy mahogany bark and the early, vase-shaped, blooms are equally lovely.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8862\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_8862\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145136\/Arctostaphylos-x-densiflora-Howard-McMinn-Paul-Bonine-Xera-Plants.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-8862 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145136\/Arctostaphylos-x-densiflora-Howard-McMinn-Paul-Bonine-Xera-Plants.jpg\" alt=\"Arctostaphylos x densiflora 'Howard McMinn' Paul Bonine, Xera Plants\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145136\/Arctostaphylos-x-densiflora-Howard-McMinn-Paul-Bonine-Xera-Plants.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145136\/Arctostaphylos-x-densiflora-Howard-McMinn-Paul-Bonine-Xera-Plants-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_8862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Arctostaphylos x densiflora &#8216;Howard McMinn&#8217; &#8211;\u00a0photo\u00a0courtesy of Paul Bonine, <a href=\"https:\/\/xeraplants.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xera Plants<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/278\/garrya-elliptica-james-roof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garrya eliptica \u2018James Roof<\/a>&#8216; was cited for it&#8217;s &#8220;for the extra long catkins in January&#8221;&#8230; and just what does &#8220;extra long&#8221; mean?\u00a012&#8243;!<\/p>\n<p>The person naming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/8940\/illicium-parviflorum-florida-sunshine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illicium parviflorum &#8216;Florida Sunshine&#8217;<\/a> didn&#8217;t say why it got the nod \u2013 however with a name like that I guess they didn&#8217;t really need to.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/#\/raw=Pittosporum%20tenuifolium&amp;filtered=True&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pittosporum tenuifolium<\/a> (specifically \u00a0&#8216;Tasman Ruffles&#8217;) got a\u00a0vote: &#8220;hands-down, at least this month. Bright aqua\/mint green crumply leaves with dark purple-brown stems that really stand out. It brightens up the fading border next to my front door. So far it appears it will be truly evergreen, and it is *gorgeous* to gaze at.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Only one conifer was mentioned,\u00a0and\u00a0it&#8217;s a good one,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/34498\/pinus-densiflora-golden-ghost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinus densiflora &#8216;Golden Ghost&#8217;<\/a> . &#8220;I planted this beauty in my garden 3 years ago and have continued to be captivated by it every time I see it. Like a lot of gold needled evergreens it does seem to intensify in its yellowness in winter but what I love most is that it has great color all year round. It has soared through drought, heat, cold, deer attacks and just about everything else.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And who would have guessed? A Rhododendron made the list! <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/6332\/pontic-azalea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R.\u00a0luteum<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;Rhododendron &#8216;luteum&#8217; holds its leaves of red-tinged gold through December.&#8221; I&#8217;m sure the yellow flowers and sweet scent are appreciated during other times of year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The humble <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/#\/raw=Cotoneaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cotoneaster<\/a>&#8221; was also mentioned as a favorite: \u00a0&#8220;I see them everywhere but they hang onto their berries for so long, they always add an eye-catching pop of colour to roadsides, verges and front gardens.&#8221; A specific species wasn&#8217;t mentioned so I&#8217;m taking the liberty of using this photo of an unknown (to me)\u00a0Cotoneaster I photographed on a walk last winter, it seems to fit&#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8878\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_8878\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145124\/Cotoneaster-NOID-Loree-Bohl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-8878 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145124\/Cotoneaster-NOID-Loree-Bohl.jpg\" alt=\"Cotoneaster NOID Loree Bohl\" width=\"1012\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145124\/Cotoneaster-NOID-Loree-Bohl.jpg 1012w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145124\/Cotoneaster-NOID-Loree-Bohl-296x300.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1012px) 100vw, 1012px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_8878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Cotoneaster NOID &#8211; Loree Bohl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The purple-tinged leaves behind that Contoneaster \u00a0belong to a Mahonia, perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/10885\/mahonia-nervosa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M. nervosa<\/a>. While that specific plant wasn&#8217;t mentioned several other Mahonia were, including <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/17410\/mahonia-x-media-winter-sun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M. &#8216;Winter Sun&#8217;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/463\/mahonia-x-media-arthur-menzies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M. &#8216;Arthur Menzies&#8217;<\/a>. About &#8216;Arthur Menzies&#8217;: &#8220;Its the center of activity in my garden. When in bloom during winter, it\u2019s alive with birds, all drawn to the nectar rich flowers. It blooms reliably every winter and out of the last 15 years I&#8217;ve lost the flowers only once to heavy frost. I\u00a0can\u2019t imagine my garden without it. I\u00a0know that it\u2019s been available for many years now and may not be the sexiest thing out there but it\u2019s proven its worth to me every winter and I\u00a0am so glad I\u00a0have it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another Mahonia lover wrote: &#8220;But I&#8217;ll go with pretty much any Mahonia, especially M. x media types like <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/464\/mahonia-x-media-charity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Charity&#8217;<\/a> \u2013\u00a0they look great year round, nice winter structure, work in most garden styles, cool bark, flowers, berries, fragrant, good for hummingbirds&#8230;I mean c&#8217;mon!&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8874\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_8874\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145127\/Mahonia-x-media-Charity-Loree-Bohl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-8874 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145127\/Mahonia-x-media-Charity-Loree-Bohl.jpg\" alt=\"Mahonia x media 'Charity' Loree Bohl\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145127\/Mahonia-x-media-Charity-Loree-Bohl.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01145127\/Mahonia-x-media-Charity-Loree-Bohl-300x295.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_8874\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Mahonia x media &#8216;Charity&#8217; &#8211; Loree Bohl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Several people mentioned the Camellia as a favorite for winter interest, but only <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/18541\/camellia-sasanqua-mine-no-yuki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camellia sasanqua &#8216;White Doves&#8217;<\/a> (&#8216;Mine-No-Yuki&#8217;) was mentioned by name &#8220;They have been blooming for over a month and will continue on for another month. It is between times for sasanqua and japonica, so we get a bit of both. Leaf off in winter gives us a front row seat to the chickadees and juncos that alight on the lovely red branches. &#8221; And\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/4609\/cornus-capitata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornus capitata<\/a> because it&#8217;s &#8220;loaded with cornus fruit right now.
