I\u2019ve gone on that fool&#8217;s errand\u00a0at least two dozen times. Today, I put camera on counter and gathered paper in hand. On my way out, I did slip the camera back into my pocket; but I threatened myself good about counting first.<\/p>\n<p>I quickly reached 105, not including multiples of the same plant. It was a good reminder of just how much of my previous garden had made the trek.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>A lovely <a title=\"Calla lily\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/13792\/zantedeschia-aethiopica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calla Lily<\/a> \u2013 came with the Alameda house when we bought it in 1980 \u2013 is still going strong. It\u2019s had compost over the years, and nothing else. <\/em><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160634\/Calla-lily-30%2B-years-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160634\/Calla-lily-30%2B-years-4.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160634\/Calla-lily-30%2B-years-4-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Most transplants resulted from the deliberate actions of my trusty plant-digging brigade. (I can never say thank you enough.) And I\u2019m happy to report that several hitched a ride on their very own. To wit: <a title=\"Devil's Trumpet\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/4658\/datura-wrightii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Datura wrightii<\/a>, <a title=\"Tower of Jewels\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/6330\/echium-pininana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Echium pininana<\/a>, and though I hesitate to mention for fear of jinxing\u2014a sweet upstart of a Phormium I&#8217;d loved and lost. The parent went missing last\u00a0winter, completely dead, I thought. The bigger Manzanitas were faint of heart; but fearing their certain fate if left behind, I wanted to give them a shot. I&#8217;m telling you, that A. Pacific Mist\u00a0had such sweet curves. A <a title=\"Darmera peltata\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/10390\/darmera-peltata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Darmera peltata<\/a> sat in a plastic bin with little water and no drainage for a couple of months. Then\u00a0I saw some at Kennedy School, planted in a fair amount of\u00a0sun, and it convinced me to just get the poor things in the ground.\u00a0I divided them and they are growing again, but what I put them through first, oy vey.
