For most of us autumn means an abundance of falling leaves. Leaves you rake, leaves you use the blower on, and then there are these. These you simply pick up by their stems, almost like you\u2019re collecting a wildflower bouquet.<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/01145413\/autumn-abundance-a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8350\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/01145413\/autumn-abundance-a.jpg\" alt=\"autumn abundance a\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/01145413\/autumn-abundance-a.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/01145413\/autumn-abundance-a-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have to laugh when I hear the advice to leave your leaves in place (in planting beds, not lawns!) over the winter \u2013 because they\u2019ll break down and feed the soil. Not going to happen with these, the monster leaves of our <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/4092\/magnolia-macrophylla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magnolia macrophylla<\/a>, at least not in a single season. They do make great mulch for some tender plants that die back, for example I&#8217;ve piled them on the top of the<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/286\/gunnera-tinctoria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Gunnera<\/a> and tucked them around the <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/10898\/melianthus-major-antonows-blue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melianthus<\/a>. They also add a decorative\u00a0touch to the top of a <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/4087\/yucca-rostrata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yucca Rostrata<\/a>&#8230;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/01145413\/autumn-abundance-b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8351\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/01145413\/autumn-abundance-b.jpg\" alt=\"autumn abundance b\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/01145413\/autumn-abundance-b.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/01145413\/autumn-abundance-b-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our friends at Xera Plants recently wrote a blog post praising the art of the garden mess. Being overly tidy can actually do your garden harm, read that <a href=\"https:\/\/xeraplants.wordpress.com\/2015\/11\/18\/to-tidy-the-garden-or-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. One word of caution I&#8217;ll add though, if you&#8217;re like me and you&#8217;re growing desert plants in a rainy climate never, ever, let leaves gather around them.
