An\u00a0intensely planted front yard stood in stark contrast to the <del>dead<\/del> dormant lawns surrounding it. At first glance it&#8217;s not exactly my planting style, with it&#8217;s colorful floral display, but I crossed the street to get a closer look and in doing so\u00a0was reminded about the importance of covering the ground.<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145537\/10.28.15a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8066\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145537\/10.28.15a.jpg\" alt=\"10.28.15a\" width=\"1024\" height=\"621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145537\/10.28.15a.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145537\/10.28.15a-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Do you like your plants to touch, or are you the type who likes to see empty space around all the players? You can probably guess where I fall on the spectrum. I not only want my\u00a0plants to touch, I want them to become intimately acquainted. This gardener has mastered the art of filling the space, but the plants don&#8217;t seem crowded, just cozy.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145536\/10.28.15b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8067\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145536\/10.28.15b.jpg\" alt=\"10.28.15b\" width=\"872\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145536\/10.28.15b.jpg 872w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145536\/10.28.15b-255x300.jpg 255w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 872px) 100vw, 872px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What really captured my imagination was the use of two fairly ordinary plants; dusty miller (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.missouribotanicalgarden.org\/PlantFinder\/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=a608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senecio cineraria<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/17144\/sedum-rupestre-angelina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sedum angelina<\/a>. Together they make magic. And yes that&#8217;s part of my shoe &#8211; for scale &#8211; so you know just how large this planting is.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145535\/10.28.15c.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8068\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145535\/10.28.15c.jpg\" alt=\"10.28.15c\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145535\/10.28.15c.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145535\/10.28.15c-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The colors, the texture! And let&#8217;s not underestimate the role\u00a0meticulous care, this entire landscape was groomed to perfection.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145534\/10.28.15d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8069\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145534\/10.28.15d.jpg\" alt=\"10.28.15d\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145534\/10.28.15d.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/01145534\/10.28.15d-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moving up to the public sidewalk another area\u00a0of ground-cover caught my\u00a0eye (<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/#\/raw=Sagina%20subulata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sagina subulata<\/a> I believe) and reminded me of something I heard repeatedly during the seminar\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedangergarden.com\/2015\/04\/drawing-nature-into-urban-landscape.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Changing Times, Changing Landscapes: Drawing Nature into Urban Landscape Design<\/a>\u201d. The idea being that we American\u00a0gardeners have fallen into a false sense of good, with our reliance on mulch (speaking primarily of choices that simply cover the soil, rather than enhance it).
