Q.<\/strong> How do you know you when you’ve crossed the line and officially\u00a0become a plant collector, rather than “just” a gardener?<\/p>\n

A.<\/strong> When you buy a plant just because it\u2019s so darn bizarre and the\u00a0words written\u00a0to describe it, “truly a plant magnet for the plantaholic,<\/em>” seem\u00a0to insist you must, simply must, have it.<\/p>\n

Aesculus hippocastanum ‘Laciniata’<\/a> has been on my radar for a while now. I\u2019ve always regarded it as a peculiarity. Interesting \u2013 but not something I \u201cneeded.\u201d However\u00a0there I was, at a plant sale, not looking for anything in particular when I spotted a nice looking little specimen. Then I read what our plant lust nursery partners had to say about it and – just like that\u00a0–\u00a0it jumped into my arms!

From Dancing Oaks Nursery<\/a>: “Truly a plant magnet for the plantaholic, this spidery leaved form of the Horse Chestnut is a real oddity. Slow growing, but can get large over time<\/em>.”
\n\"Aesculus<\/a><\/p>\n

And this one, from Garden World<\/a>, added fuel to the fire\u2026”Rare and slow growing cultivar of the native Oregon horsechestnut. Shaggy serrated leaves and dissected to the base and have a very unique look. Although it grows very slow, and appears to be dwarf, very little is known about this plant<\/em>.”
\n\"Aesculus<\/a><\/p>\n

Of course I concentrated on the descriptions that used the words: “A slow grower<\/em>” “A good container plant<\/em>” “extremely slow in containers.<\/em>” Rather than: “can get large over time”\u00a0<\/em>“It makes a handsome tree in a larger setting<\/em>” or “always beautiful large flowering tree.<\/em>” We hear\u00a0what we let ourselves hear, right?<\/p>\n

The only in-the-ground\u00a0specimen I’ve seen is this one growing at\u00a0Rare Plant Research<\/a> in Oregon City, OR. That’s it over on the far side of the moat, next to the walkway…
