Touring a gorgeous garden is always a nice way to spend an hour or so \u2013 but when things get personal, and you discover the gardener shares a passion of yours, well, it\u2019s even better. I bet you can guess what passion I am referring to?<\/p>\n

While on a blogger\u2019s pre-tour for this coming Saturday\u2019s HPSO\/Garden Conservancy event<\/a> I was thrilled to discover Chris Mitchell and I share a love for Agaves.
\n\"CM100\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There were containers spread around her\u00a0garden, here a pair of Agave americana ‘Variegata’<\/a> and a sexy A. \u2018Blue Glow\u2019<\/a>\u2026
\n\"CM102\"<\/a><\/p>\n

But she\u2019s recently gone a step further and created an area where she can put some of her treasures in the ground\u2026
\n\"CM103\"<\/a><\/p>\n

She\u2019s had this handsome Agave parryi<\/a> for years (I didn\u2019t ask exactly how many years, but she\u2019s attached, and can you blame her?). I think it\u2019s going to be just fine left in the ground through the winter.
\n\"CM104\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the star of the planting! Along with the gorgeous blue Senecio<\/a> which she\u2019s growing as an annual.
\n\"CM105\"<\/a>
\n\"CM106\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Ok wait, did I say “the star?” Well maybe it’s got competition. Check out this combination of the dark Sedum (\u2018Vera Jamison\u2019<\/a> maybe? Or ‘Bertram Anderson’<\/a>?) with Agave parryi ‘Cream Spike’<\/a>…dreamy!
\n\"CM107\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And I should mention that ‘Cream Spike’ is having a bit of an identity crisis. Check out this post <\/a>on Succulents and More where Gerhard discusses the troubles the experts are having in determining exactly who its parents are. Not that we really care when it looks this amazing, right?

Notice how the new growth on the Opuntia pads mimics the conifer planted behind, isn’t that wonderful?
\n\"CM109\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Ah, there’s that A.\u00a0parryi again…

And check out the “mulch” Chris used to hide the fact she sinks a large plastic container into a heavy decorative one. I was tempted to do this in my garden with my recent windfall of Spanish moss<\/a>, now I think I just might!
