As those of you who read my personal blog (danger garden<\/a>) know \u2013 and are probably sick of hearing about \u2013 I opened my garden as part of a fund-raising tour last weekend. One of the frequently asked about plants was the Callistemon viridiflorus<\/a>. Some of those asking expressed shock it was hardy here in Oregon, followed by a sort of disapproving grunt and something about \u201cgrowing them in California, why would I want to grow it here!\u201d I\u2019ve heard a similar reaction from others who\u2019ve grown up surrounded by \u201cbottlebrushes\u201d they don\u2019t feel the attraction that I do\u2026<\/p>\n

Maybe that\u2019s why I\u2019m fascinated by them? Because they’re a little exotic here, representing\u00a0a warmer place, and yet they effortlessly grow in my garden?
\n\"1<\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve planted two Callistemon viridiflorus<\/a>, one in the front garden\u2026
\n\"2<\/a><\/p>\n

And one in the back\u2026
\n\"3<\/a><\/p>\n

The thing that makes this particular bottlebrush special is the flowers, they\u2019re a yellow\/green\u2026
\n\"4<\/a><\/p>\n

Rather than the typical red, seen here on Callistemon ‘Woodlander\u2019s Hardy Red\u2019<\/a>…
\n\"5<\/a><\/p>\n

Which I love too! (and have planted 3)
\n\"6<\/a><\/p>\n

If the flowers aren\u2019t enough to excite you, how about the seed pods? You can see both last years hardened pods and the current year’s “just bloomed” pods here on C. ‘Woodlander\u2019s Hardy Red\u2019.
\n\"8<\/a><\/p>\n

Heck there’s even a dwarf (to only 3ft tall),\u00a0Callistemon viridiflorus ‘Xera Compact’<\/a>, for those of you worried about space.
\n\"Callistemon<\/a><\/p>\n

We’ve had such a hot, dry summer\u00a0here in Oregon I’m really appreciating how little water these beauties need. Oh, and there’s one other hardy bottlebrush in my garden, Callistemon sieberi<\/a>. Although in this, the only photo I could find of it, it’s being upstaged by a blooming\u00a0Parahebe perfoliata.

So that’s my little post in praise of the much-maligned bottlebrush. Is there anything you grew up surrounded by that you’d never plant in your garden? For example, that question brings to mind another extremely common plant in California (they grow in street medians and parking lots for goodness sake) the Agapanthus<\/a>, which we tend to love up here in Portland.<\/p>\n

Oh and here are a few Callistemons<\/a> I’d love to be able to grow, but they just aren’t quite cold-hardy enough to make it in my garden…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
