Isn&#8217;t it funny, how you can moon over some rare\u00a0and expensive plant. And then you finally add it&#8211;just to have peeps push past to\u00a0rave\u00a0about some\u00a0inexpensive annual floozie.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not seriously complaining, because I love when people get\u00a0interested. Maybe they&#8217;ll take up gardening. And before you know it, the whole world will be a better place. I bought it for $3.99 at Garden Fever in NE PDX at least three seasons ago. I expected it to peter out on our previous hellstrip, but it kept coming back. And then I thought I&#8217;d abandoned it when we moved. But a little piece hitched a ride. How I love my generous gardening\u00a0friends. You may think you&#8217;ve seen this photo before, over at <a title=\"Opuntia Santa stops by\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedangergarden.com\/2012\/09\/the-opuntia-santa-claus-stops-by.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">danger garden<\/a>. But it&#8217;s a new batch from the same source. <em>(Yes, we keep our cars forever&#8211;though in one case, a Volkswagon Vanagon was\u00a0stolen from our driveway in the\u00a0fancy neighborhood. It was the worst car in the area. The police said some hippies must have taken\u00a0it! You stick Opuntia paddles in the ground, and they grow. These even had flowers this year. No, I did not take a picture&#8211;because that would be advanced planning. I know I planted this, but geeze Louise, it still surprises heck out of me how things up and grow. The <a title=\"Castor Bean Purple\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/45111\/ricinus-communis-new-zealand-purple\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Castor Bean<\/a>, <a title=\"African Feather Grass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.missouribotanicalgarden.org\/PlantFinder\/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?taxonid=295320&amp;isprofile=0&amp;force=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">African Feather Grass<\/a>, and <a title=\"Many Prickly Pear Cactus are hardy in Oregon\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/16970\/opuntia-cacanapa-ellisiana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Opuntias Noid<\/a>&#8211;all free! Look at all that gratis impact. It was a fine day out with <a title=\"Tamara on Little Prince of Oregon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chickadeegardens.com\/2014\/10\/a-local-wholesale-nursery-little-prince.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fellow bloggers<\/a>. Pretty decent\u00a0punch for the buck. Then I couldn&#8217;t resist next time I went back and bought a second plant. My initial Verbascum &#8216;Arctic Summer&#8217; became a behemoth of great beauty. It was $3 or maybe $4. And I was pretty happy with it when it was just a big velvety rosette.
