And like maniac gardeners everywhere, spent countless hours in the yard\u2014planting, composting, attempting to eradicate the sins of my past. Bishop\u2019s Weed. How did I not know? It says WEED in the name.<\/p>\n<p>My husband and I added more than 25 trees to our 50 X 100 corner city lot, some choices better than others. But the birds seemed perfectly content. <a title=\"River's Purple European Beach\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/4252\/fagus-sylvatica-riversii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">River\u2019s Purple Beech<\/a>;\u00a0dark chocolate luscious looking leaves, an excellent choice, so say the Downy Woodpeckers. <a title=\"Himalayan Birch\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/9594\/betula-utilis-var-jacquemontii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Himalayan Birch<\/a>:\u00a0peeling white bark, and bright\u00a0winter interest, Bushtits, Goldfinches, and Western Tanagers approved.\u00a0<a title=\"Mimosa\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/3920\/albizia-julibrissin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Persian\u00a0Silk Tree<\/a>:\u00a0gorgeous &amp; tropical looking, albeit kinda\u00a0messy. We got no complaints from a Macaw who\u00a0once alit\u00a0there. It can be done.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nWe eventually succeeded in creating a shady west-side garden. And we added a bluestone patio under the trees&#8211;by chance, a place\u00a0with good\u00a0air flow. It became a favorite spot for a summer sarsaparilla and conversation, our version of the American front porch. We also made a deal with neighbors: if they heard a\u00a0wine cork pop, they were welcome to join us. It made for many an impromptu get-together, sans\u00a0hand-wringing over a perceived messy house.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_599\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_599\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160750\/photo-2-Web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-full wp-image-599\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160750\/photo-2-Web.jpg\" alt=\"front patio shade garden\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160750\/photo-2-Web.jpg 900w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160750\/photo-2-Web-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">front patio shade garden<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was a hard decision, leaving the home where we\u2019d raised our kids, and the neighbors we loved, and the garden we&#8217;d tended so long. But the time had come. I knew I wanted to take plants with me, however, I\u2019d super duper broke my arm months earlier, and after surgery, plates, pins\u2014and 5 months of physical therapy\u2014there was no way I could do it on my own. Enter fabulous awesome generous PDX garden bloggers. They arrived en masse, shovel in hand, and digging commenced. Most are thriving. And there\u2019ve been a few\u00a0surprises, my hitchhikers. Opuntia, Nicotiana, a crazy Datura I paid $3.99 for and considered an annual. It was a show-stopper in my old garden, and here it is, rising out of nowhere, third year in a row. (I hear\u00a0they can be invasive, but fortunately, not so here in zone 8.) And a healthy looking Echium pininana. Perfect.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe new garden is private, mostly at the back of the house, twice the size of our previous lot, and surrounded by a six-foot fence. I miss seeing what the neighbors are up to. And\u00a0there&#8217;s no instant entertainment, myriad walkers and runners, kids and dogs, and after we moved\u2014I\u2019m told\u2014the nude bicyclist parade. But this garden is a new kind of fabulous. I get so much more done (because I don\u2019t spend half my time visiting.) Our dog Pumpkin can be in the yard with me, and when she\u2019s not busy digging a big ole hole, she lolls around singing, &#8220;If I were\u00a0king of the forest&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160749\/Punky-Lolling.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-619\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160749\/Punky-Lolling.jpg\" alt=\"Punky Lolling\" width=\"568\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160749\/Punky-Lolling.jpg 568w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/01160749\/Punky-Lolling-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we moved into our other house, a million years ago, I didn\u2019t know anything about gardening, though I religiously added\u00a0Red Zonal Geraniums to the planters that came with the house, and I still think they have their place.
