As I\u2019ve visited, and photographed, other people\u2019s gardens I\u2019ve noticed how an empty container, placed just so, seems to act as both; a focal point and negative space. At least to my way of seeing, and of course it\u2019s only negative space when it\u2019s left empty, something I don\u2019t seem capable of doing (see a pot = put a plant in it).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This bright orange\/red container makes a great\u00a0focal point, and since it&#8217;s placed at the convergence of several paths it also acts as a sort of \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wayfinding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wayfinding device<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154041\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5228\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154041\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-2.jpg\" alt=\"Kuzma Garden 2014 2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154041\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154041\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-2-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154041\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-2-400x250.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And it wouldn&#8217;t be nearly as dramatic\u00a0had it had been planted up.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154040\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5229\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154040\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-3.jpg\" alt=\"Kuzma Garden 2014 3\" width=\"1024\" height=\"660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154040\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154040\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-3-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The openness of this front courtyard is less overpowering when your eye has a large blue urn to rest on.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154041\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5227\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154041\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-1.jpg\" alt=\"Kuzma Garden 2014 1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154041\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154041\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-1-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here a smaller urn, partially obscured, gives you the feeling there might be more to this corner than meets the eye.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154039\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5230\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154039\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-4.jpg\" alt=\"Kuzma Garden 2014 4\" width=\"875\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154039\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-4.jpg 875w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154039\/Kuzma-Garden-2014-4-256x300.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 875px) 100vw, 875px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t always understood, or appreciated, the empty container.
