Then they go on to show photographs of plants that are actually grey, white or blue. I have nothing against those plants (they\u2019re some of my favorites) but when I want silver I want shine\u2026<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been said (more than once and by more than one) that if it\u2019s silver and shiny then Loree will like it. While I start\u00a0to protest I think they\u2019re probably actually right, as proven by my love for metal containers and shiny\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedangergarden.com\/2014\/05\/12.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stock tanks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Looking closely at the plants I call\u00a0silver, most of them are covered with tiny hairs that reflect the light, and make them soft to the touch. They\u2019re typically pretty\u00a0drought tolerant too. Here are some favorites, in no way is this an exhaustive list, just a few I\u2019ve grown, or wish I could\u2026<\/p>\n<p>When I discovered this particular plant on a walk I didn\u2019t know what it was, even though I\u2019d grown <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/6468\/convolvulus-cneorum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Convolvulus cneorum<\/a> in my own garden. Mine never looked this good! Perhaps I shall try again.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154123\/convolvulus-cneorum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5107\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154123\/convolvulus-cneorum.jpg\" alt=\"convolvulus-cneorum\" width=\"915\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154123\/convolvulus-cneorum.jpg 915w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154123\/convolvulus-cneorum-268x300.jpg 268w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 915px) 100vw, 915px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dichondra argentea &#8216;Silver Falls&#8217; is one I&#8217;d admired in other&#8217;s gardens (here dripping over the entry wall at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedangergarden.com\/2013\/08\/so-i-visited-another-pair-of-open.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lauren Hall-Behrens Portland garden<\/a>) and finally grew for myself last summer. It&#8217;s an annual in my climate, I will probably add a couple to the garden this year.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154122\/dichondra-argentea-silver-falls.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5108\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154122\/dichondra-argentea-silver-falls.jpg\" alt=\"dichondra-argentea-silver-falls\" width=\"853\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154122\/dichondra-argentea-silver-falls.jpg 853w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154122\/dichondra-argentea-silver-falls-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After ordering\u00a0my first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/5041\/lupinus-albifrons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lupinus albifrons<\/a>\u00a0from Annie&#8217;s Annuals I&#8217;m hooked on this plant. Our local Xera Plants has been offering them this spring and I&#8217;ve added four more to my garden. Oh and the original has bloomed. A fact I wasn&#8217;t thrilled about but I actually kind of like the deep purple flowers.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154121\/lupinus-albifrons.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5110\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154121\/lupinus-albifrons.jpg\" alt=\"lupinus-albifrons\" width=\"828\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154121\/lupinus-albifrons.jpg 828w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154121\/lupinus-albifrons-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m shouting my love for <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/6514\/echium-wildpretii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Echium wildpretii<\/a>\u00a0loud and often. I bought a few at a local nursery a couple weeks back and had a nice long conversation about them with the cashier, who wasn&#8217;t yet familiar with their charms. Oh and those hairs that usually make silver leaves soft? Not the case here. In fact these are almost as wicked as Opuntia glochids.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154122\/echium-wildpretii-close-up.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5109\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154122\/echium-wildpretii-close-up.jpg\" alt=\"echium-wildpretii close up\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154122\/echium-wildpretii-close-up.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154122\/echium-wildpretii-close-up-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sigh, now were in &#8220;wish I could grow them&#8221; territory. <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/27497\/bismarckia-nobilis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bismarckia nobilis<\/a>\u00a0is, in my opinion, the most beautiful palm there is. Sculptural, silver fronds&#8230;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154124\/bismarckia-nobilis-close-up.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5105\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154124\/bismarckia-nobilis-close-up.jpg\" alt=\"bismarckia-nobilis close up\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154124\/bismarckia-nobilis-close-up.jpg 768w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01154124\/bismarckia-nobilis-close-up-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And an explosive type of growth habit, as though fireworks were going off.
