Recently my garden was open to 80+ garden bloggers from around the world. The comments I enjoyed the most were ones along the lines of \u201cseeing your garden helped me realize I don\u2019t need to pay attention to the rules, they don\u2019t matter, I needed to start doing what makes me happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_374\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_374\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Too-close-together-1236x1280.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-large wp-image-374\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Too-close-together-1236x1280-988x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Rule breaking! Plants too close together\" width=\"988\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">Rule breaking! Plants too close together<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yes! Gardening is supposed to be fun. Break the rules, push the boundaries and plant whatever makes YOU happy. Some things will die, you\u2019ll dislike some areas and have to start over. And yes, some of your neighbors will wonder what in the heck you were thinking. But many things will live, you\u2019ll love your garden like never before and passers-by will want to know \u201cwhat is that plant and where can I get one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the rules I break regularly pertains to what should be grown in my Pacific Northwest Garden. Why? I have a severe case of plant lust, I want all the cool plants and I\u2019m willing to do what it takes to keep them happy. What if the owner of this garden (below) planted only what\u2019s typically seen in his neighborhood? Then we wouldn&#8217;t have a local landmark <a title=\"Agave salmiana\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/5576\/agave-salmiana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agave salmiana<\/a> that stops people in the street to stare.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_373\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_373\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Agave-salmiana-c-1280x875.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"size-large wp-image-373\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Agave-salmiana-c-1280x875-1024x700.jpg\" alt=\"You CAN grow agaves in Portland, Oregon\" width=\"1024\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\">You CAN grow agaves in Portland, Oregon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thankfully he didn\u2019t know you \u201ccan\u2019t\u201d grow agaves in Portland, Oregon. Tony Avent, owner of Plant Delights Nursery, is credited with saying \u201cI consider every plant hardy until I have killed it myself&#8230;at least three times.\u201d That\u2019s the spirit! However it is nice when the plants live, both for the pocket book and gardening morale. By doing a little research and making sure you\u2019re giving your plants the things they need to thrive (excellent drainage for those agaves along with plenty of sun) you\u2019re setting yourself up for success. Then again sometimes happy accidents occur, like my planting this <a title=\"Agave parryi 'J.C. Raulston'\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/8163\/agave-parryi-jc-raulston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agave parryi &#8216;J.C. Raulston&#8217;<\/a> at the base of a winter-drinker <a title=\"Arctostaphylos x densiflora 'Howard McMinn'\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/61\/arctostaphylos-x-densiflora-howard-mcminn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arctostaphylos x densiflora &#8216;Howard McMinn&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_373\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_373\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Agave-parryi-J.C.-Raulston-1280x960.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-371\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Agave-parryi-J.C.-Raulston-1280x960-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Agave parryi 'J.C.
