Key plants that look good, individual things that I can concentrate\u00a0on. A garden with layers and layers of interest isn\u2019t as needed in the wintertime, I don\u2019t spend that much time outdoors. Something that grabs my attention and briefly pulls me into the garden is all I ask. An occasional unexpected surprise is nice too, a sort of reward for my time and investment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are three categories my winter-interest plants fall into. First are the evergreen stalwarts, the plants that just always look good (Old Man Winter permitting).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First off\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/14632\/agave-weberi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agave weberi<\/a>, because who doesn&#8217;t want a big bad agave right outside your door?<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155124\/Agave-weberi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3384\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155124\/Agave-weberi.jpg\" alt=\"Agave weberi\" width=\"1024\" height=\"962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155124\/Agave-weberi.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155124\/Agave-weberi-300x281.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/4091\/schefflera-taiwaniana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schefflera taiwaniana<\/a>, I lusted after this plant for what seemed like forever. The silver glow of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/5041\/lupinus-albifrons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lupinus albifrons<\/a>\u00a0is lovely year round but really stands out during the darker months.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155115\/Lupinus-albifrons.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3396\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155115\/Lupinus-albifrons.jpg\" alt=\"Lupinus albifrons\" width=\"891\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155115\/Lupinus-albifrons.jpg 891w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155115\/Lupinus-albifrons-261x300.jpg 261w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 891px) 100vw, 891px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The blooms of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/10235\/callistemon-viridiflorus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Callistemon viridiflorus<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0striking, but the seed pods left behind add interesting structure in every\u00a0season.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155123\/Callistemon-viridiflorus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3386\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155123\/Callistemon-viridiflorus.jpg\" alt=\"Callistemon viridiflorus\" width=\"830\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155123\/Callistemon-viridiflorus.jpg 830w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/01155123\/Callistemon-viridiflorus-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/402\/magnolia-laevifolia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Magnolia laevifolia<\/a>\u00a0carries these fuzzy brown buds all through autumn and winter. Who doesn&#8217;t love the promise of spring in the form of January flowers?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ll ever become one of those gardeners who gets all giddy over hellebores, but I wouldn&#8217;t be without a few of them.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/11567\/helleborus-x-hybridus-jade-tiger-winter-jewels-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helleborus x hybridus &#8216;Jade Tiger&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was an impulse purchase last winter, I had no place in my garden for another small tree &#8211;\u00a0naturally I bought it anyway.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/299\/hamamelis-mollis-early-bright\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hamamelis x intermedia &#8216;Early Bright&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0has an amazing fragrance and I look forward to it getting big enough that I have to prune it, indoor branches!<br \/>\n<a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also true I never stop looking for new (to me) plants that look particularly attractive this time of year. Not that I have room in my garden, but you know&#8230;a gardener is always looking for more plants! Visiting nurseries continues throughout the winter months, and yes living in a USDA Zone 8 climate does help. Our nurseries always have plants for sale&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/525\/pinus-contorta-var-latifolia-chief-joseph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinus contorta &#8216;Chief Joseph&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0is a favorite of the nurseries in the winter months.
