{"id":2884,"date":"2014-12-31T09:10:24","date_gmt":"2014-12-31T17:10:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogadmin.plantlust.com\/blog\/?p=2884"},"modified":"2024-01-24T06:40:07","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T14:40:07","slug":"falling-in-love-with-aloes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/blog\/gardens\/falling-in-love-with-aloes\/","title":{"rendered":"Falling in love, with aloes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last spring, after hauling several awkward (and heavy) containers up from the basement, my husband Andrew proclaimed: \u201cyou really need to stop buying agaves and buy more aloes, they\u2019re nicer.\u201d I have to admit he\u2019s right, aloes have considerably less-lethal spikes than agaves, and they can be just as dramatic in the landscape, even in containers \u2013 as I\u2019m forced to grow them in my winter-wet USDA Zone 8 garden. They can however be fairly difficult to find in these parts (Portland, Oregon), something once true of the now, relatively, easy to find agaves that I love.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2891\" stays small and thus easily managed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>My fellow agave lover, Denise, author of the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/agrowingobsession.com\/\">A Growing Obsession<\/a>, has quoted a California nurseryman as saying \u201caloes have replaced agaves in popularity, because people have gotten wise to the approximate 8-year death spiral of agaves, the bloom-and-doom cycle, which isn\u2019t the case with aloes, reliably flowering as they do year after year.\u201d So maybe there is hope that aloes will become more readily available, even up here in NOID) at Balboa Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were so many, and they were so beautiful, but\u00a0after 4 or 5 days even my eyes started to gloss over. I wouldn\u2019t have thought it possible but I have to admit it happened.<\/p>\n<p>Back home I\u2019m currently growing approximately 21 different aloes (compared to over 60 agaves) and find them easy to overwinter in a container (indoors for the tender ones, outdoors, but undercover, for the hardy). Unfortunately it&#8217;s rare that one of them blooms, but I do claim\u00a0to be a foliage, rather than flower, gardener.
