The bones of a good tree, fruit laden shrubbery, spiky plants scoffing at cloudy\u00a0skies. The bark of Crape Myrtles, Stewartias, and Japanese Maples, ooh la la. Confiners busy on\u00a0double duty, sinewy structure through lush green foliage. Miscanthus and Carex still strut their stuff. The<a title=\"Concordia Campus Gardens\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/blog\/gardens\/musing-on-miscanthus-and-other-mass-plantings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Concordia Campus<\/a> gardens look almost as good as at the height of the season. And the Barberries, holy moly. The yard is full of birds. All the usual suspects: Sparrows, Chickadees &amp; Bushtits, American Robins.\u00a0<a title=\"Northern Flicker\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/northern_flicker\/id#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Flickers<\/a> visit regularly, and yesterday three at once. We\u2019ve also had some more unusual visitors, the <a title=\"Spotted Towee\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/spotted_towhee\/id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spotted Towee<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0<a title=\"Varied Thrush\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/varied_thrush\/id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Varied Thrush<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Western Tanager\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Western_tanager\/id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Tanagers<\/a>. Pretty pretty birds. I have feeders outside my work area, but I need to step up with more plants to satisfy the birds and bees. It\u2019s such an essential element. Where have I been? Likely a <a title=\"Agave ferox\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/4308\/agave-salmiana-var-ferox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agave salmiana<span style=\"color: #363636;\">\u00a0var.\u00a0<\/span>ferox<\/a> per Greg Shepherd of <a title=\"Xera Nursery\" href=\"https:\/\/xeraplants.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Xera Plants<\/a>, though the stats claim\u00a0it doesn&#8217;t grow here. I happened by it\u00a0last week, and took a moment to swoon. The Agave\u00a0is perfectly sited, south facing on a hillside with tons of drainage. Gardeners around these parts know and love it. <a title=\"Agave NE PDX\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedangergarden.com\/2012\/04\/another-enormous-agave-here-in-portland.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danger Garden<\/a>&#8216;s take here. Even the pup is outstanding. (One day, it\u2019d be fun to list all the Bloggers who\u2019ve done a post on this specific\u00a0plant.) Now, Spireaes and Azaleas are fine shrubs, but not necessarily year-round stunners. I&#8217;m envisioning an architectural plant of note for that spot, something to provide\u00a0year-round thrills. A clip here, a test strip there\u2014and pretty soon it looks so awful, I have to do something drastic. I\u2019d even gone so far as to order a new, lighter weight pick axe, thinking maybe that was the ticket. (In my defense, I still can \u2018t effectively swing the dang thing\u2014my pesky broken shoulder even a year later is still not at peak performance levels.) I eventually got all the branches removed I was stuck at needing to get the stumps out. In this case, chains and our aging Mercedes SUV: a\u00a0regular\u00a0<a title=\"Top Gear: Antics by Men\" href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Top Gear <\/em><\/a>Operation.
