I can\u2019t imagine not taking advantage of the occasion for a little creative display, and the opportunity to haul things from outdoors inside for a couple of weeks.<\/p>\n<p>I do take liberty with the definition of &#8220;tree,&#8221; where&#8217;s the fun in the expected? In 2009 fresh from a trip to San Francisco, where we fell hard for giant tree ferns, our tree was a potted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/4137\/dicksonia-antarctica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dicksonia antarctica<\/a>. By the time it went outside there were only a few happy fronds left (the indoor humidity was lacking), but it recovered quickly and lives on to this day.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155551\/2009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2553\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155551\/2009.jpg\" alt=\"2009\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155551\/2009.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155551\/2009-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re wondering about that little guy with the big eyes (in front of the tree fern) that&#8217;s Tanuki, My husband brought him back from Japan. &#8220;The legendary tanuki is reputed to be mischievous and jolly, a master of disguise and shapeshifting, but somewhat gullible and absentminded. It is also a common theme in Japanese art, especially statuary.&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Japanese_raccoon_dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">source<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In 2010 I was feeling a little minimalist. Our tree consisted simply of branches (heavy with lichens) stuck in vase.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155551\/2010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2554\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155551\/2010.jpg\" alt=\"2010\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155551\/2010.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155551\/2010-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By 2011 I&#8217;d fallen hard for <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/18571\/cedrus-atlantica-glauca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blue Atlas Cedar<\/a>\u00a0and jumped at the chance to buy some cut branches. They were hung with long, dangling, ornaments and went in a vase. I also pulled out the vintage aluminum tree and decorated it as well. I&#8217;d bounced back from the minimalist leaning in 2010.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155549\/2011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2555\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155549\/2011.jpg\" alt=\"2011\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155549\/2011.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155549\/2011-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2012 was a big experiment. I wanted the sparkle of the aluminum tree but the smell of <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/?raw=eucalyptus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eucalyptus<\/a>. Odd, but it worked.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2556\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2012.jpg\" alt=\"2012\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2012.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2012-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Blue Atlas Cedar crush had finally been fulfilled in 2013 and my oddly shaped little tree came inside for the holiday. Cones scavenged from a neighbors tree inspired the mantle garland.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2557\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2013.jpg\" alt=\"2013\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2013.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2013-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s 2014 and this year&#8217;s tree consists of foraged branches attached to a tomato cage. Cut <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/#\/raw=leucadendron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leucadendron<\/a> stems are natural\u00a0ornaments.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2558\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2014.jpg\" alt=\"2014\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2014.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155548\/2014-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What does the future hold?
