Now that I&#8217;ve got caramelized onions with saut\u00e9ed sweet potatoes and zucchini as &#8220;spaghetti&#8221; I&#8217;ll never use pasta again. This month, we also have two birthdays, my husband&#8217;s and my daughter\u2019s. And there\u2019s Christmas\u2014it&#8217;ll be fun trying to keep the kitties out of the tree. And I\u2019m working on a new color\u00a0scheme for the entire house. That\u2019s all.<\/p>\n<p>I love painting. But without fail, I back my way into that project, telling myself I\u2019m just testing color and will do the actual painting later. \u00a0Then the next thing I know, the house is in complete disarray, with patches of test color everywhere\u2014except the room I\u2019m wanting to get to in the first place: the kitchen &amp; family room. And I had the idea that I&#8217;d use seaside tones in the rest of the\u00a0house, sky and sand and dune\u00a0grass colors. So began the just-the-right-color chase. I painted most of the fireplace three or four times until I allowed myself to get that really dark color\u00a0I wanted, Gropius Gray from Miller Historic Colors.<\/p>\n<p>I admit to being a bit manic over paint. For instance, I love the idea of turquoise, but have never successfully gotten it right. It always ends up looking too blue, or too green, or too garish. I tried five different blues before I gave up on that notion&#8211;and I asked the crew at Miller Paint to refuse me if I asked for more. I know most by name.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Still, I agonize, and test, and paint entire walls so that I can see. And almost without fail, I love the color as it\u2019s going up, knowing it\u2019s going to dry darker. I always think I won\u2019t like it as much\u2014and sometimes I go back and ask for the color it is when wet. Which is just about impossible.<\/p>\n<p>I managed to finish the guest room yesterday. It\u2019s a bright green called \u2018Rain Boots\u2019. Low hide, which means a minimum of three coats + considerable touch up. The color reminds me of new Vine Maple leaves, an ethereal\u00a0chartreuse. It\u2019s pretty bright in that room, but in the gray of winter, a most welcome sight. The sun came out for minute a day ago, and it almost glowed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155634\/IMG_7463.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2443\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155634\/IMG_7463.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_7463\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155634\/IMG_7463.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/01155634\/IMG_7463-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I like warm colors\u00a0in plants too, usually selecting yellow and green over blue or silver. But once in a while, the blue shade is perfect, for instance <a title=\"Agave 'Silver Surfer'\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/8168\/agave-silver-surfer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agave \u2018Silver Surfer\u2019<\/a> or that fabulous little spiky <a title=\"Spanish Fir in Boring Bark Display Garden\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/blog\/garden-nurseries\/everythings-coming-up-conifers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish Fir<\/a> I saw last week at Boring Bark. Their display gardens had every color of green and blue, and it looked so right. These colors can cozy up in the garden and look terrific, but not so much in the house. Or else I\u2019m doing it wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Once in a while, I\u2019ll see a picture on line or in a magazine with a pure white color scheme. Like planting an all white-blooming garden. Oh, that\u2019s pretty, I think\u2014knowing full well I couldn\u2019t live with it for long. Doesn\u2019t mean I wont still try it, but days later, you\u2019ll find me repainting the whole thing. Which is why I\u2019m having so much trouble trying to coordinate the colors now from room to room. In my early days, I didn\u2019t realize how much more bang you get for your buck in consider the color in an adjoining room. It reads warm gray in the living room, with its two picture windows and a ton\u00a0of light. But I&#8217;m not enamored\u00a0of the way it\u00a0shifts to a sort of blah green\u00a0in the connecting hallway. I&#8217;m planning\u00a0to change the hallway color for now, so it&#8217;ll be a lot more fun. But the walls are continuous into the entrance hall and living with no really good breaking point.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty sure too, that the &#8220;done&#8221; living room isn&#8217;t far behind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had this idea I\u2019d be outside working on a few winter-long projects, like removing the mass planted juniper.
