A brilliant pairing, and not exactly my idea. The planter was intended\u00a0as a sink. I found it in the free pile after a street sale in my old neighborhood. All these sedums were rescued from the old garden. I tossed them in this outcast\u00a0as a temporary measure. Oh sure, I put things in the ground, but what they decided to do from there on is out of my control. And\u00a0then the next thing I know, gloriosity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Many of my gardening pals claim that they plant things in random order. I know I do. But I\u2019d be willing to bet, we\u2019re all are busy drawing schematics\u00a0and scenarios\u00a0in our heads. Of course, not the pros, who clearly have a more orderly approach, <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 13px;\">and commit it to paper<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">. But I\u2019ve also visited a number of fabulous professional gardens, and even among that brilliant\u00a0gang, there\u2019s a fair amount of tsk tsk tsking: that\u2019s should over there and that should be there and my legs are over there. The Hot Bed, The Tropical Zone. The Shade Corner. The Woodlands. My former young\u00a0neighbor and garden helper, Cayton Carli, saw it right away. She stood in the middle of our yard pointing it all out: that\u2019s the desert; that\u2019s the woods; that\u2019s Hawaii. So there must be some kind of plan if an eight-year-old can see it.<\/p>\n<p>Now I realize\u00a0I need a thicket, a nice tangly place where birds and bees and bugs can hang out. I hadn\u2019t thought about that initially. But I do like my garden a little wild in the middle, within the confines of a decent borders\u2014same as I like my haircut. There\u2019s a wild thicket just over our fence, kind of a scary mess, but the birds love it. I just loved the bare bones of their <a title=\"Royal Raindrops Crabapples\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/22347\/malus-royal-raindrops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malus &#8216;Royal Raindrops&#8217;<\/a>. I may not go with that particular species, though part of me still wants to. Nancy Buley, Ms. <a title=\"Treephoria Boutique Tree Nursery\" href=\"https:\/\/treephoria.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Treephoria<\/a> herself, suggested <a title=\"Golden Raindrops Crabapple\" href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/10889\/malus-golden-raindrops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malus \u2018Golden Raindrops\u2019<\/a> might be a better choice. And then Vanessa Gardner Nagle suggested the same tree. It must be a sign. I saw a fabulous Oxedendron arboretum aka Sourwood at Treephoria as well, and read later that they likes a woodland setting. That\u2019s thicket-ish, no?<\/p>\n<p>So for the Thicket layering in to create a sweet spot for wildlife, that doesn\u2019t look too wildly overdone\u2014that\u2019s the goal.\u00a0I had a general idea, and yesterday paid a visit to Xera. It\u2019s their last weekend for the retail shop until next Spring. Here&#8217;s my bounty.
