I&#8217;d taken a walk past <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/blog\/author\/patricia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patricia&#8217;s<\/a> old garden and spotted a new crop of <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/6514\/echium-wildpretii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Echium wildpretii<\/a> seedlings. Knowing the new owners were planning on a clean sweep (out with the plants, in with the lawn) Patricia and I were there early the next day to dig.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This is what we were after&#8230;a second crop of seedlings from a plant that bloomed in 2012. These all died off the winter of 2013\/14 (or so I believe). The ground we had to dig in was rock hard, and even though we watered before we dug I\u00a0still was only able to get the tap root. All the other roots broke off and stayed in the soil. I had little hope for these making it.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144224\/Echium-rescue-B.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10529\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144224\/Echium-rescue-B.jpg\" alt=\"Echium rescue B\" width=\"1024\" height=\"757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144224\/Echium-rescue-B.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144224\/Echium-rescue-B-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But this is a tale\u00a0of survival! Seven of them lived on to be planted\u00a0out in my garden the following spring. Being their second year (they&#8217;re typically biennial) I thought that meant\u00a0flowers that summer (2015), but it was not to be. But of course the bloom is gorgeous and it&#8217;s fun to watch the bees work it over.
