I\u2019ve sadly been battling a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cactus-art.biz\/note-book\/Dictionary\/Dictionary_M\/dictionary_mealy_bugs.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">mealy bug infestation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10422\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_10422\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144300\/mealy-bug-infestation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-10422 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144300\/mealy-bug-infestation.jpg\" alt=\"mealy bug infestation\" width=\"800\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144300\/mealy-bug-infestation.jpg 800w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144300\/mealy-bug-infestation-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_10422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\"><em>this planter of Agaves would have been fine with a few dead and yellowing leaves removed, instead it got the heave-ho. just too many ugly mealys to deal with<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A few of my more common Agaves had been tossed and I could see a few more were headed that direction. Of course others are special enough that I\u2019m treating them with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.succulentsandmore.com\/2014\/01\/mealybugs-you-vex-me.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a solution my friend Gerhard recommends<\/a>. And keeping a very close eye on them, this is not how I want to downsize.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just the quantity of tender succulents that\u2019s being shrunk. I\u2019ve also culled a few things from the garden. I know\u2026you\u2019re shocked right? But it was time, and the garden is better for it.<\/p>\n<p>What have I gotten rid of? A NOID <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/search\/#\/raw=Callistemon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Callistemon<\/a> \u2013 I had a pair of them, bought on the cheap \u2013 now I only have the one (and it\u2019s about to bloom for the first time). The departed plant could come back from the roots, but I doubt it\u2026too much shade. Things grew and it lost the battle for space.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10418\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_10418\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144303\/Callistemon-NOID.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-10418 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144303\/Callistemon-NOID.jpg\" alt=\"Callistemon NOID\" width=\"1024\" height=\"710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144303\/Callistemon-NOID.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144303\/Callistemon-NOID-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_10418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\"><em>if this is how crowded the Callistemon I kept is &#8212; just imagine what the other one looked like&#8230;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I also (this is shocking, I hope you\u2019re ready for it) cut out a Magnolia, <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/402\/magnolia-laevifolia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M. laevifolia<\/a>. It\u2019s a long ugly story (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedangergarden.com\/2016\/04\/in-vase-on-monday-learn-from-my.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detailed here<\/a>) but suffice to say I made a stupid mistake and I finally paid the price. I think the surviving plant is happier without its twin.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10421\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_10421\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144301\/Magnolia-laevifolia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-10421 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144301\/Magnolia-laevifolia.jpg\" alt=\"Magnolia laevifolia\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144301\/Magnolia-laevifolia.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144301\/Magnolia-laevifolia-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_10421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\"><em>the surviving\u00a0Magnolia laevifolia has been blooming for a couple of weeks, and snowing petals upon the ground<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I dug out a <a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/27988\/pittosporum-tenuifolium-atropurpureum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pittosporum tenuifolium &#8216;Atropurpureum&#8217;<\/a> because it no longer made me happy. Oh don\u2019t get me wrong, it\u2019s a swell plant. In fact when I saw this small one in Sean Hogan\u2019s garden I desperately wanted to plant it again. True. Well first I gave a lot of cuttings to the fine folks at <a href=\"https:\/\/cistus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cistus Nursery<\/a>, for rooting (so the plant will live on). Then I filled a few vases around the house\u2026<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10420\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_10420\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144302\/Grevillea-victoriae.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-10420 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144302\/Grevillea-victoriae.jpg\" alt=\"Grevillea victoriae\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144302\/Grevillea-victoriae.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144302\/Grevillea-victoriae-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_10420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\"><em>wouldn&#8217;t it be fabulous if these cuttings rooted? Grevillea victoriae for all my friends!<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then I sawed the plant\u00a0into small pieces and cut out the base. Again, it was in too tight of quarters to have dug out without severing its roots, and those of the plants nearby. And it\u2019s not like I\u2019ll be going without, I have two other G. victoriae in the garden, one (&#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/plantlust.com\/plants\/13770\/grevillea-victoriae-murray-valley-queen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Murray Valley Queen<\/a>&#8216;) just feet away and it\u2019s terribly floriferous\u2026<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10419\" aria-describedby=\"figcaption_attachment_10419\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144303\/Grevillea-victoriae-Murray-Queen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" itemprop=\"contentURL\" class=\"wp-image-10419 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144303\/Grevillea-victoriae-Murray-Queen.jpg\" alt=\"Grevillea victoriae 'Murray Queen'\" width=\"1024\" height=\"865\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144303\/Grevillea-victoriae-Murray-Queen.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/d17vsf20mehj1i.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/01144303\/Grevillea-victoriae-Murray-Queen-300x253.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_10419\" class=\"wp-caption-text\" itemprop=\"description\"><em>crazy orange\/red flowers in January, yes please!<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So now you know, I haven\u2019t just been planting this season, I\u2019ve also been purging. Kind of an odd topic for a blog that aims to share the joy of gardening and lusting after new plants, right? It might seem so but I don\u2019t agree. Many of these left because of my overplanting (&#8220;cramscaping&#8221;) tendencies, and I don\u2019t regret it one bit. I loved them, they grew, and I decided when they had to go. I enjoyed them for years in between and now the plants around them have a little more room to stretch out. And you know I\u2019m still buying!
