Clematis Rooguchi is a relatively new selection from Japan with a loose sprawling habit that can be allowed to ramble through your garden or can be guided and tied to supports. Its deep purple, 2.5 inch flowers have an open bell shape and are borne all summer long! I have seen this grown to perfection through the legs of a tall climbing rose where it held dozens of flowers out from the mass to adorn what would have otherwise been an unsightly thorny mess. Small Flowered Clematis. Ozawa, Japan 1988. This is a Group 3 (C) Clematis, which means it flowers later in summer and into fall in colder climates. In warmer climates it may begin blooming much sooner. Group 3 Clematis form flowers on new growth each year, so for the best display and neatest look they should be pruned back hard each spring to about two feet off the ground or even less if desired. However, if you are training one of these into a tree or onto an overhead arbor they should be left much longer. Look for fat, healthy buds on sturdy canes and make your cut just above them. Remove dead or damaged branches any time.

One of best small-flowered Clematis cultivars which was introduced to the PNW by our friends at Joy Creek a few years back and has proven to have few rivals. This is the Jackie O of Clematis - impeccable breeding and style. Graceful thin-waisted trumpets of indigo blue on 8' vines.

Don't be confused. This hybrid of Clematis integrifolia and durandii behaves as an herbaceous perennial that needs a support. It could grow to 6' in 1 season, but will not take on a pergola or tall archway. That being said, 'Roguchi' produces an abundace of 2" cobalt blue bells from June until September. Clematis 'Roguchi' grows well in many hot southern zones as well as cold northern climates. Use to climb through shrubs, an adornment for a garden obelisk or in front of a fence in need of interest.

Virtually anyone who has grown Clematis 'Roguchi' agrees this hybrid, from breeder Kazushige Ozawa-sani of Japan, is one of the finest bell-shaped clematis ever introduced. Starting in early May and continuing through September, this free-flowering Clematis integrifolia x durandii hybrid is covered with large 2" cobalt blue bells. Clematis 'Roguchi' has an amazing range, growing equally as well in Minnesota as it does in Houston, Texas. Don't worry about pruning, since it is a perennial and will die to the ground each season. For us, Clematis 'Roguchi' makes a 6' tall clambering vine...perfect for weaving through shrubs like a motorbike in a traffic jam.
