We first saw this giant calla at the California garden of plantsman/garden writer, Sonny Garcia and were literally blown away. Lining the walkway were these giant, green and white speckled-leaved Zantedeschia aethiopica callas, whose foliage topped out above waist high. Even more amazing were the 6' tall flower stems towering above my head. The flower is the classic, large, creamy-white cup typical of the species...except this selection has been doing some really good steroids. In our garden, we have only been able to muster 4' tall stems, 2' long x 1' wide foliage and 5.5' tall flower spikes, but that's still not bad. Keep in mind that the height increases each year as the diameter of the tubers increase.

This fantastic, imposing, giant selection of Z. aethiopica features five foot clumps of white-speckled, ruffled arrow-shaped leaves topped by seven foot tall flower stems carrying the classic white boot-shaped calla flower. For full sun and moist soils. Green until hard frosts. Mulch with fallen leaves - pack leaves around the perimetre and right into the centre of the plant to protect the crowns in winter. Calla lilies can be slow to bulk up in the garden so investing in a larger size is a good idea.
