Truly, an orchid for all gardens...or as close as we will come. This easy-to-grow native orchid is the southern form of Spiranthes cernua (or a separate species depending on your choice of taxonomists), ranging from Virginia south to Florida. The ground-hugging, dark-green rosettes spread slowly by underground rhizomes, creating a nice colony when growing in native habitats such as moist soils, bogs or swamps. In mid-September, the insignificant rosettes produce incredible 1' tall spikes spiraled with small, white, bell-shaped flowers, emitting a delightful fragrance often described as a cross between vanilla and jasmine...a superb plant everyone should grow!

Small vanilla scented white orchid flowers spiral gracefully up 30-50cm stems, its one of the showiest species and is fairly easy in a damp spot; it has proven to be quite amenable to pot culture for us.

An orchid native to the eastern US, this herbaceous perennial sports a low rosette of strappy leaves from which arises upright stems 10-20” tall decorated with small VERY FRAGRANT hooded white flowers from late summer to frost! Appreciates moist to wet acidic soil and part shade, but also tolerates some degree of dryish shade to wet sunny sites. Slowly expands (doubles annually) by rhizomes, can reseed on moist soil. Great cut flower, situate where you can enjoy the sweet vanilla scent!
