This is the most cold-tolerant, easiest-to-grow, and one of the most spectacular of the pitcher plants. The red-veined green pitchers usually turn a lovely blood red in fall. As with Sarracenia psittacina, the pitchers lie flat on the ground forming a 1' wide clump with the opening facing upwards. Sarracenia purpurea produces new pitchers throughout the growing season, topped with red flowers in spring.

Sarracenias and other carnivorous plants are some of the most unusual manifestations of nature. This hardy Purple Pitcher Plant grows about 6-8" tall and has unique blush-purple coloring with pinstripe veining on the hood. Downward hairs in the opening of each pitcher entice insects to enter and meet their demise. Although smaller than the tropical pitcher plants, Purple Pitcher Plant is native to eastern North America from Virginia to Canada. A flower emerges out of the center of the plant during the summer months.
