Hurray for this nearly spineless, not-too-prickly, prickly pear with blue-green pads, to 6" in diameter, in clumps to as much as 3' tall x 4' wide. Late summer flowers are bright yellow. Of probable Mexican origin and found in cultivation in and about alpine Texas, these are beautiful, architectural plants, fast-growing and safe to have around small, curious children. Loves summer water but can fare well without. Frost hardy into the bottom of USDA zone 7. A plant with many synonyms including O. lindheimeri var. ellisiana and O. cacanapa 'Ellisiana'.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if they invented a hardy cactus without spines? They have! Opuntia ellisiana was selected by Luther Burbank, famous California plantsman, over 75 years ago. This cactus is extremely tolerant of cold as well as winter wet, making it an excellent choice for dry landscapes in the northwest. New "pads" grow each spring. Yellow flowers in late spring. To 3' tall by 4' wide in full sun with excellent drainage.

This is an old Prickly Pear cultivar (sans prickles) selected by Luther Burbank who apparently hated to be poked while weeding among the cactus. This handles our winter cold and wet without a whimper as long it has great drainage. Nice yellow flowers and big new pads each spring.

Thanks to Scott Ogden and David Ferguson for pointing out a major error...the plant we offered as 'Burbank Spineless' is the wrong plant. Burbank's plant is a form of the less hardy Opuntia ficus-indica. Our plant is a spineless selection of the US/Mexican native Opuntia cacanapa named 'Ellisiana'. For us, this fast-growing but compact opuntia makes a 3' tall x 6' wide deer-resistant mound (in 5 years) of 6" grey-green spineless pads. In August, the clump is topped with large, bright yellow flowers, followed by large red "pears." Well-drained winter soils are vital for best performance.
